SD pheasant brood count is out, up 42% from last year. Should be a great first year for the pup it does take birds to make a bird dog. Just got 4 mallards delivered from UPS and threw them in the freezer. Now hoping the girlfriend doesn't find them....

Also Mud River has 40% off everything today only, actually the whole Boyt Harness website. Use code FALLFEVER at checkout. Just got a Med. cover and cushion for the pups Ruff Tuff Intermediate sized double door crate and "saved" $61.

Roxy likes to hang out in the beds of the trucks - even in the garage. Doesn't like her picture being taken.

I got home late last night so the wife had dinner with her parents. I decided to take the dog for a run. We extended our route a bit and took a different street. Lo and behold a dog owner was in his front yard with his Rottweiler Mix off leash. It spotted us, ran across the street and went after my pup. It lunged at her so I blocked it with my leg with a "push". I turned to see the owner calmly walking towards us with a cigarette in his mouth. The dog came in again so I used a bit more force to get it away and told the owner to get his dog. Owner was still taking his sweet time. Third time was enough so I used enough force to give it a yelp and the owner finally showed up. My shins a little bruised. He said "sorry" and before I could tell him what I really thought I remembered I was only 5 minutes from my house and my expecting wife and nine year old daughter frequently walk the dog alone some days. So I calmly explained the leash law, told him he has to be careful, and went on with my run.

It was an oh shit moment for sure.

Just bought 2 insulated crate covers from them. Saved $105. Really good deal. Thanks Cold Iron!
Earlier this year I was on GunDog Forum and somebody posted Cabels's had Ruff Tough intermediate crates for $114, snagged 2 of them. Talked to Ruff Tough rep
at Pheasant Fest, he said Cabela's had made a major error.

Damn you did good, real good. Yeah they made a mistake I paid for mine what you paid for both of yours! One of the better investments for the dog I have ever made though and the insulated MudRiver covers are icing on the cake. I ordered another crate cushion because the one I have now he chewed a corner up as a young pup so I will use the new one for place training in the house. He is laying on my feet right now last couple of days wore his little arse out doing retrieves and scent work with birds so he is recharging. Can't wait to watch him come unglued when hundreds of pheasants take off for the first time!

I bought 2 pads a couple of weeks ago from Gundog Supply. Really like those folks. Was going to buy the covers from them before season started, but couldn't
pass on this deal. Making tie-downs for my crates to secure them in my truck, and I'm ready for the season. Going out for the dove opener on Tuesday, but no dogs.

I hate when that happens. I've had similar incidents in the local parks near my house. A couple times it was the same dog. It would lay in wait for my GSP, when she was younger. It was a mutt, but had to be part herding dog. The old lady would do nothing as her dog charged at mine. I gave the dog a decent kick once, and told the old lady I would kick the crap outta her dog if she didn't control it. Some people are just plain clueless.

More training. Sadie doesn't usually lift a leg during the point so this is a rare one. Also, she still has a slight bend in her tail. Dang. I brought a chuckar home, and it's in a cage in the back yard. So, naturally, Sadie goes out there and provides the PERFECT point. Frozen. Tail, steady and true, pointing to the sky. Why can't she do that in the field???

    This is from the field.

    Down And Dirty Tailgate Mat

Found a 3x4x1/2" Rubber mat at Tractor Supply for $20.

Replaced the Tailgate cap screws with longer stainless steel screws of the same pitch and stainless fender washers. No drilling and easy to put back to original.

A tad short at the ends, but it meets my needs and the dogs have already figured it out.

Agree seen that on UJ, already have some large wire ties in the vest for Connies but thinking a set of wire cutters is also a good thing to carry.

Like your tailgate job. I got carried away with mine which seems to be the norm when it comes to the dogs. Bought the flat steel powder coated replacement cover and have it on. But also want something for my knees and the dogs to grip. Bought a 3x5 1/8 rubber mat, the texture looks almost identical to yours. Spent a small fortune on Industrial Strength Velcro just need to cut it and apply it some evening. Ended up going with the OEM bed mat after all.

My truck is new and I'm reluctant to start drilling on it this soon. Mat is 1/2" thick and easy on the knees. Important part is dogs have a grab when they jump up.

Read an article about the zip ties for the connebears, but it stressed a strength specification. All mine are Harbor Freight cheapos. Will check it out before season.

My crate covers will be here tomorrow, thanks again.

I don't think they give points for style points in the field unless your doing a trial or test looks good to me! :p But I hear you, the Setter I tried for a few months last fall pointed with a horizontal tail. He is soaking wet here, he never met a mud puddle or pond that he didn't like
    [IMG]

To me the reason for having a Setter is the straight in the air tail with the long hair blowing in the breeze. Going to have to brush out all that hair afterwards might as well have it look good LOL. But honestly he still got the job done no matter how he held his tail
