Making progress on the gate this evening!! Supposed to start raining tomorrow and possibly through the weekend, so dry weather tonight = gate time. Rain coming up = test drive cars!! Pics coming soon - getting the little lattice squares installed now!! It's looking good guys!! :) At least we kick ass at something!! :D

Oh yeah, more bad news too. Eric thinks it might be time to finally addressing that Taco wheel bearing issue that's been silently haunting us. Going to review the thread for pointers you all gave me many moons ago about that project, then probably order parts from RA soon. Will be asking advice all over again on that one when the time comes to actually do it! Might shoot for doing that the week of Labor Day, because he's off work that week.........

@koditten , any update on the gazebo project?

Last update was the most current. Been at work for a 2 week stretch. Can't get much done when you only have 2 hrs of daylight or less to work.

I will be picking up the gazebo kit next Thursday. Hopefully the company did not lie to me and it assembles as easy and quickly as they claim.

As for those wheel bearings; I'll never change another myself. What a pain in the ass. I like to think I have a pretty extensive tool supply. I found out the hard way that I'm not set up to change WB. Someone else can do it next time.

BamaToy would be my first choice next time a WB needs replaced.

I gotta agree with "K" here, certain jobs you are better off paying to have done for you and that is one of them. its not like they charge a fortune to do it if you bring the part to them.

Wait, @keakar and @koditten , do you guys mean the machine shop part of the wheel bearing job or the whole job start to finish?

Is the bolded part what you guys meant? Or is taking the front spindle off the truck something that is super difficult/requires special tools?

Removing entire spindle with the bearing still in it is not too bad of a job. Getting the bearing out and a new one in is the hard part.

Yes, take the entire spindle out and take to a shop that has EXPERIENCE in pressing in and out these type of bearings.

I believe the way Bamatoy rolls is to send you entire spindles and bearings. You won't get your original spindles back. No biggie, they will be genuine Toyota spindles.

Basically, you buy entire spindle/bearings and get a credit when you send in your old bearing/spindles. This way you are not stuck with a truck up on jack stands for a week waiting for new parts.

I would check in with your favorite mechanic. I'm sure they have the proper bearing press at his dealer. The going rate is around $50 for shop time to press in and out bearings. His dealer may be a bit more, but you can be sure they have experience doing these type bearings.

    Hope this helps.

Thinking about calling OPB to see about donating the Civ today. Can't imagine getting much for it from anyone, and not sure I'm up for the hassle of trying to.

Knowing us, I'm afraid if it keeps sitting there, eventually Eric will start looking into it. NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@BamaToy1997 offers the whole hub assembly, remove caliper and rotor, nut from CV axle, and 4 bolts to remove!
Don't need a press, just the right tools...

Yeah, everyone in my club recommends the @BamaToy1997 assemblies. It's pretty easy for a shop to screw up pressing a bearing and wreck the whole assembly. At least with Bama you know you are getting a top end assembly that was pressed in professionally by someone who does it almost every day.

Sounds great to me, but wasn't there some reason we didn't plan on that initially when we first heard talk of a possible bad bearing? I can't remember - so much has happened since then with car prob's!!!

But was it that we had a different type or something and that wouldn't work? Or maybe we were thinking the shipping would kill the idea? Not sure. Anyone remember?

It's basically a Mitsubishi RVR isn't it? Super small SUV with a car like feel.

My opinion is that you can get a Juke for the same money and the Juke is:

    A) A proven car so less chance of recalls or issues due to a new design
    B) Far more powerful
    C) Far better AWD system
    D) More ground clearance for snow

IMHO The Nissan Juke is a much better buy.

    Boo!!

Whether all that is true or not, you have to admit that the Honda HRV is downright sexy compared to the Juke!!! I kind of puke in my mouth when I look at the Juke. Sorry, just being honest. :D

AND, it's a Honda. You know me and my brand loyalty!! ;) Seriously though, who wouldn't have some hardcore brand loyalty to Honda after what the Civic has done for me? Until recently, I barely ever had repairs on that car. And when I did, they were reasonable in cost. And I drove it hard.

I remember when I first moved to Oregon, and wanted to check out a hike someone told me about. Coming from the Midwest, I had no idea what a "logging road" was. Suddenly the little red Civ coupe and I were on our way up washboard gravel, climbing to some crazy high elevations, with a giant cliff along the side of us and an occasional boulder or pothole in the road. I'm pretty sure that car has ~1/2" of ground clearance - kind of like feeling as if you are sitting ON the road when driving it. Everyone survived, including the Civ. Maybe that's why she needed a new CV shaft 10+ years later?

That car was put through its paces its whole life, with minimal repair expenses, and it lasted a ridiculously long time. As a result, I am sold on Honda's reliability and value for the rest of my life, pretty much above any other type of vehicle (sorry Toyota & TW peeps! Toyota is a very close second on that list!! :)). Hell, even my little red Honda pressure washer is invincible!! Hardest working tool I've ever owned!!! :) Most fun too ;)

I thought the HRV's were ~$30K, so even though I thought they were dreamy, I never even let myself consider them. But just found out this morning they are $22K.

While it would be nice to take a 4 or 5 year loan with a payment on the low end of what we can afford (ie, getting a Yaris or something comparable in price), when I think of having the car we really, really want - the one that we would actually ENJOY driving, AND love the look of, AND offer the design/space we want, AND get awesome MPG, AND have AWD, AND most of all have the Honda reliability and value that I so love? It starts to seem worth it to go for 6 or 7 years on the loan and spend a little more per month. Especially when I think about the Civ's lifespan - it's 22 years old. So even if we took the max of 7 years to pay an HRV off, we'd potentially drive it another 15+ years beyond that, as long as we took care of it. And I KNOW that car would serve all of our needs well for the next 20+ years. I just don't see us outgrowing it, which I can definitely see with a Yaris, or some other comparable "not exactly what we want" car.

The real bummer is that they are so new and high in demand right now. I bet by this time next year, we'll see the remaining 2016's being offered at discounted prices with financing incentives. :( But we can't wait any longer. Gotta get something ASAP.

Right now no dealers around us have any in stock! I just talked to our local dealer about it, and he's gonna let me know when they are getting some.

But he said since they are in such high demand, there is no room to negotiate on the price. Does that seem right to you guys? Makes sense to me - high demand + low supply = high prices and vice versa, but just wondering if it could be a sales tactic or something?

I agree the Honda has a much tamer look than the Juke. Again I'm just pointing out the practical. The Juke is a far better car. Weird looks, but it has a better AWD and more powerful engine with similar fuel economy. As for brand loyalty and tame looks, well, if that's what you are after the HRV has those in spades.

You are forgetting though that a totally new design comes with new design problems. While the engine is fairly tested the rest of the design is new. Recalls and maintenance issues aren't well known on the HRV and, while it's a Honda, just being a Honda won't certify it free from teething pains (just ask a CRZ owner).

As for your argument about new you are 100% right. It's a totally new car that you are going to keep for at least a decade. Buy something you can be happy with for a decade! Otherwise you will end up trading it in or hating it quietly, the first of which loses you money and the second just plain sucks. I really advise that you start looking at ALL the manufacture websites you can and seeing what is available in your price range. I know you want a Toyota or Honda, but who knows what will catch your eye.

Honda doesn't offer much for rebates normally. It doesn't surprise me that the salesman only want MSRP. Contact the web sales person at that dealership. Usually they are a bit more aggressive and they might off a bit of discount that a normal salesman on the phone won't offer immediately.
