There are locksmiths/Lexus dealerships that can cut inside-cut keys on site to get in the car. Toyota dealerships may start having the equipment too, now that many cars are moving that way.

It's definitely possible to lock the car with a key inside of it using the other key, but I'm not 100% sure that's a bad idea or not.

If the smart key is locked inside the vehicle. Can't you touch the drivers door handle and unlock the door?

I tried that on the XLE that I had at the time and it did not unlock.

What I am trying to figure out is if the push button start is removable to put in a key.
Seems this one is hard to answer on Google. Looks like it isn't a universal system on all car makers so while some makers may have it set up where you can just remove the button, Toyota may not do this.

I really, really, really, really don't want this in my truck. I'll pay good money to have it ripped out, I just want to know it can be done.

No, they key would need to be outside the car for that to work.

No, the smart key isn't really removable, and no, you can't pull the button out to put in a key.

I agree with the removal thing. Just how complex would it be to trade these things out? How different are the electronic innards behind the actual button vs key tumbler? Anyone have any experience with this?

    The better coast

Let's say your other key is in the car and someone breaks in and happens to press the start button.

    They just hit the lotto.

Really, guys are going to cut this out

Sure it takes a little getting used to but, trust me, try it for a few months and you won't want to take it out. I loved it in the last vehicle I bought that had it.

A push button is less likely to fail than a key cylinder so this thread is made just for the sake of complaining.

How is this different without a push button start? :)

Personally, I like the mechanical feel of the a tumbler & key.

You get use to the button. My complaint is that I haven't bothered to figure out how to get ACC to work properly on our car with the push button.

why not just remove the little mechanical key from one of the two FOBS and hide-a-key it somewhere on the underside of the truck or have a copy of that made - they are those double sided keys and probably pricey but that seems like a good solution to the scenarios presented ...

I had this type of system on a rental recently for a few weeks and after i got used to it i liked it. i just left the keys in my briefcase full time - that way they always got out of the car with me :)

People using smart keys for their cars open whole new range of possibilities in Europe smart keys may get banned because all the problems..

1, Smart keys changed carjackings. Before people took your car and left you on side walk. Now they either toss you in the trunk or shoot you and toss you on the backseat because they dont trust you if you going to give them right smart key plus no time to look for one.
    2. Cons brick your car in the middle of nowhere to extort money. This one is pretty common.
    3. Young ladies getting kidnap while getting in the car, because smart key will open doors to anybody as long as key is in your pocket, this can not be changed because you want emergency or police to be able to open doors too.
    4. People leaving cars running.
    5. People causing accidents because they forgot smart key, but started the car when key was in range just to drive away and have car stop mid traffic, because key still is on milk crate next to where car was parked.

This happens with normal keys too.
You mean they hack the smartkey? Not sure what you mean here.
On my Nissan only the driver door had a button to unlock to doors with the fob in my pocket. If I just pressed the button only the driver door unlocked. If I held it for more than a second all the doors unlocked. Again this is nothing new, just the same as a keep fob
Idiots do this with keys too. Call it Darwin at it's finest if someone gets CO poisoning from leaving a car running in their garage after the thing beeps at you wildly when you get out while it's still running.
What? I could drive without the smart key for as long as I wanted if I forgot it at a stop. This happened to me once when I left the keys with my parents to start the car when I was going on vacation in the winter I drove a 1/2 hour there with the key, realized I forgot the spare, and just left the car running in the driveway so I could drive it a half hour home. No issues.

Seems to me like most people are just making things up, exaggerating things, or over worrying about something that is VERY easy to get used to. If I could of got smart key on my 2013 Tacoma I would of.

Hahaha #4.....I worked at a hotel and this happened ALL too often.....some cars have a timer for the engine idling.....

this person must have had their keys in their BMW and it idled all night. He was an arrogant as when he checked in and didn't want us to know his car. And when he came out to find his car idling he threw a tantrum that we didn't tell him

    Yup completely make up...
    http://money.cnn.com/2015/08/26/autos/keyless-ignition-lawsuit/

Your car had slightly different setup.
Now watch, after this lawsuit all companies in US will be required to implement the same safety mechanism (shutdown car when key is out of range) Which will trigger wave of #1, #3, #5

I said some of the things people are saying is made up. A lot of it is true but once you've had the car a few weeks it's completely normal to realize if the car is beeping it's still on. My Nissan only had a little button on the driver door to get in and that solves a lot of the issues concerning security. I'm sure as the technology matures it will get better and better as well.

Something in me wonders if these were issues when cars went from hand cranks to keys :p.

That would suck, considering what year this is. They've got a lock there. They already have wires run into the tailgate backup camera. Why wouldn't they just throw in a $90 actuator?
