did my alternator just quit?

my excuses are heavy in here i guess lol.

i had about 30 minutes to get them both out before work, will take them tomorrow before work to get them both stress tested and pick up new ones. hoping to have it ready by the weekend if i find another hour or so!

also sheared 2 bolts on the front factory skid plate.. will be picking those up too



can anyone tell me how they have their batteries secured down? i can pick the battery up an inch with this piece of junk bolted down all the way

 

Battery tie downs for factory vehicles just keep it in place. Movement is fine. If you're going baja, they won't do the job.

 

yea this one has seen better days. this is my hunting truck/offroad truck so it does get quite a bit of bouncing around and treated pretty rough, so i need something more re-enforced, i have some industrial sized thick zip-ties, but id rather find something a little more secure

little update: had a minute today to run to AutoZone.

alternator failed the test and battery is just drained pretty good. picked up a new alternator but didnt have time to install today. so the alternator was the problem, thanks for the tips guys!

going to invest in a good battery charger as soon as money allows.

would it be okay right now to jump start the truck and let the alt charge the battery up?

well i got the new alternator in and jump started the truck. let it run about 15 minutes, then noticed its really rough idling.

could the failed alternator have caused something else to go bad?

it idles bad and shakes, when i tap the throttle it shakes a little worse before smoothing out. could this be related at all?

 

no, check for loose vacuum hoses and all connections in engine bay

i read something on toyotanation that says that the computer has to relearn the idle if the batteries are disconnected for a long period of time? ive really never heard this before

when i first started it the belts squealed really bad then i let it idle for about 15 minutes

 

If you go to a place like interstate batteries they will have a multitude of diff sized batteries. They can hook you up with a larger/taller battery to fix your loose/floppy battery situation.

 

dont really want to buy a new battery, that doesnt really solve the issue lol

i grabbed 2 industrial zip-ties and put them all the way around the battery and through the holes on the inner fender well for the battery tray to sit on. its really secure now, can rock the truck from the battery so it shouldnt go anywhere now

 

Yeah the motor shakes bad when you connect a low battery back up and cold motor. It's normal. Once motor is warm and you have enough battery voltage the ecu will start adjusting fuel trims.

 

thank you! i shut it off because it was worrying me. ill start it up and get it fully warm by driving around my peoperty, im hoping this solves my issues

That battery is too short....

 

well i fixed mine cheaper than buying a new one. thats a win in my book
