I know. Every truck I've ever owned was on 10 ply E rated tires.

But, I also never complained about a rough ride while rolling around at 35 PSI offroad on E rated tires and a midsize truck that is half plastic. :)

I have been under the impression that OME consider ride quality and performance less than they go for weight carrying and durabity.

Rolling mass, air pressure, and sidewall stiffness all have an impact on ride quality and vehicle performance.

I have the adjustable ones on now. Don't like them at all. I do have them pre-loaded a lot due to my plate bumper but hard is too harsh for my liking. I have had lifted YJ, Tracker, Ranger, Ram, FX4..I must say my Taco rides the roughest considering the $ put into it.

    Change title to:
My opinion on OME 885 coils.

Keep in mind for some its the best route to got to achieve the lift they want in the price range they need.
Personally when I think of lift coils I think of a stiff ride, but I would also expect it to be. I also think of taking from my available down travel in order to achieve lift, which again has an impact on the quality of ride. I'd like to think most consider this when choosing the coil or lift, but apparently this isn't the case.

So is it the coils are stiff (your opinion) or is it that you purchased the wrong kit for the intended use?

A title like this is unfair IMO

I think threads like this are great. Regardless of the title it gives people a lot more insight. Not being a mechanic or having access to trying out different lifts before dropping a lot of money on them it's nice to hear people's unbiased opinion. I don't know how many post I've read where people say stuff like "this lift rides like butter". I know everyone's idea of a good ride vary (what you call butter I feel is stiff) but it's definitely nice to hear different opinions IMO. For me at least threads like this make me do more research before dropping coin. Great part of the forum.

Oh I agree, but just like people are led to believe they ride like butter they are also led to believe they are absolutely horrible based on the title.
That's the only reason why I propose the change.

The firmness is ok, it is the no down travel that makes it rough and hop, tires coming off the ground because of no suspension travel again has nothing to do with tires. Not my fist 4x4 I currently own a ford ranger, an F250, 2 RAM 2500 HD trucks and a Hemi Durango. They all go off road and all ride better than the 885 ome Taco. There is alot to be said when you would rather off road a single cab long bed ram 2500 HD with a coil spacer lift and ten dollar shocks with E rated tires. Everyone agrees that tires affect ride but if the suspension does not work than tires are just a bandaid. In my opinion the ome lift is for mall crawlers or pavement pounders similar to tuff country type lifts where it looks and not performance. I am sure the ome stuff handles heavy weight and feels smoother when loaded, most suspensions do. I apologize for the title but its my opinion. Dont be brand blind. One of the ram HD trucks is a quad cab cummins with pure performance long arm front end with carli coils and track bar running 37/12.50-20 tires at 50 psi with a modified stock rear spring pack and dual bilstein 5150s up front and single bilstein 5100s out back and rides better when going through rocks than the butter 885 ome. The F250 is a 12 model 4 door short bed that is stock and rides better. These threads help others to not buy into the hype. I think the ome is for running a 200lb bumper and driving at a crawl, It has its place but not on my truck. This is not meant to offend but to give others a heads up. I am willing to bet there are several ome trucks with unhappy owners that dont want to admit it. However I am sure there are plenty that love it. I got the tacoma to beat the crap out of it and not to take a beating from it.

My OME suspension does not ride 'harsh' at all, it's only slightly stiffer than stock. For comparison, my buddy has an '05 stock DCSB and drools over the way mine rides. Same goes for a buddy with a big ole Dodge Ram hemi. Both can't believe how controlled and responsive my truck is over rough terrain. I don't do any slow technical crawling type off-roading, so I'm not sure about that, but for hunting this would be a perfect setup to bomb down whatever any shit country roads or dirt trails are going to throw at you. Ever drive a pos wrangler? That's harsh.

I don't think I move as fast as you or my FSR's aren't as rough, I don't mind my 885's and Dakar's. I do haul a fair bit of gear when hunting and certainly notice the difference when I don't have the weight.

So after reading this entire thread......I am assuming the conclusions are:

    1. OME makes a solid suspension on a budget but has a harder ride and the front shocks make a clunking sound on up travel.

    2. If you have the money and want a smoother ride, get Fox or King for the front but the OME dakars are still good for the rear.

Please let me know if I am on the right track with this way of thinking......

Didn't mean for this to be an OME bash fest but wanted to get some honest opinions and facts on the table. I like the OME rears just don't like the front Struts not having enough travel to be an off road set up

In a sense yes. But if you're spending money on Kings, Fox, Icon, ADS, then you would expect it to ride better. Riding harsh is subjective to who is riding in it, I have 5100s, and 887s and don't think it rides harsh in any sense. Unless you like OME coils on OME shocks, try OME coils on 5100s, since they have a little more than an inch more down travel, and takes a little more to get them to top out, though it can happen. Speed bumps are meant to keep drivers from running over pedestrians, so if you go slow like you're suppose to, and like I do most of the time, you will probably never experience it with 5100s, as I never have. I have occasionally hit them at 15+ mph, though I don't promote flying over speed bumps, and never heard a peep. Was it smooth? Not exactly, but speed bumps aren't meant to be.

In short, if you can afford to fix shit when you tear it up for going too fast for trail/road/weather conditions, then you can afford some high end coilovers. Not saying OP was, but if the shoe fits, lace it up.

I really enjoy my 885x with my 5100's. Couldn't be happier with the ride.

∆ This! I have OME 887's with OME shocks up front. Go over a speed bump daily. Never heard a clank. It's all in how you drive I think. And I don't "creep" over then either. But I also don't fly over them.

I hit speed bumps pretty sometimes but never have a harsh ride in the front, just the rear.
