And it prolly has all the interior parts.

Buddy of mine in college, his mom had one of those. We took that thing everywhere. Snow tires on the front and there was nothing stopping it.

I knew that was coming eventually!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tell me your reasons. Seriously. I forgot specifically what your reasons against them were. Snotty owners? Battery concerns?

Oh c'mon. Cut me a little slack, I've had just a tiny handful of things on my mind lately when it comes to cars!!! Please tell me again, I promise I am listening. :D

Are you saying "yes" to battery & snotty as your concerns? Can you be more specific on your battery concerns? The cost to replace?

The bad part about owning a Prius? It takes a month to kill yourself by running the Prius in a closed garage.

The Prius always reminds me of a giant computer mouse. I want to right click that thing and delete.

    Got it.

As much as I want to say that part doesn't bother me - the part about other drivers, neighbors, friends, TW peeps, coworkers all going "EWWWWWWWWW" when we say we bought a Prius, it does. And not just because I care what people think - I do, but more because I think it could actually be semi dangerous!!! When we test drove it, Eric said there was a giant huge massive RAM or something behind us, and the guy was purposely riding our asses. Yikes, that is actually kind of scary!

My father in law has a Prius. 8 years old. It needs a new battery. I found a recycler in Calgary that is reputable selling refurbs for $2200. So, no, it won't cost as much as the car to replace the battery pack if you need a new one. However you should factor about that cost into your calculations on fuel economy. At 7-10 years old you will need a new battery.

My father in law might trade in the Prius, even with it's dying battery it's still worth 10K, for a new Nissan leaf. His rationale is that he may as well trade in for the piece of mind of having a brand new car with warranty again. You might find yourself in the same loop if you go with a hybrid, or even the new HRV with it's advanced transmission and engine.

The hybrid is definitely electrically more complex and the battery is computer controlled. That being said there are thousands of 8-9 year old Prius cabs with hundreds of thousands running around cities right now with no funny computer or electrical issues. Most people who rant negatively about hybrids aren't giving you all the facts or state repair estimates from 10 years ago when the technology was new.

Jen Its kinda imposible to factor mpg's on that Prius because you have no idea how much driving will be under 30mph, it won't be much.

I think you need to ask these question on a Prius forum....you'll get all the "its the best car ever" talk and they'll convince you to get one. Bam end of story. Car troubles/decisions over. You'll be the only couple in Oregon with a Tacoma and a Prius in the same drive way...

Its the fact they're touted as being so environmentally friendly. Big fat lie!

If you like the look of one then get it based on that. Don't get it because you think its saving the polar bears. How's that for good straightforward info for ya jen.

And K, bull shit would you sport one!

It is coming from the car, 90% of the time you are on the gas motor and the rest of the time its coming from the power plant or coal power plant. You'd be lucky if you can use hydro power. But even its still not void of pollution. So it's kinda doubled up so to speak.

NiMH is a recyclable technology. The impact on the environment from the battery and battery manufacturing is low. I'd be far more worried about the waste produced from millions of IPhones with their lithium battery packs and heavy use of rare earth metals that have huge environmental impacts.

I fully agree with that but what does it take to manufacture, recycle and reuse? Lots of power and fuel. If ya keep looking down the line the environmental impacts are still there. Just hidden from the main stream consumer.

I'm not trying to make this point cause I'm an eco green freak, far from it. It just pisses me off that we get this shit crammed down our throats, especially here in Oregon! And its not helping anything...and its super deceiving.

In the end I feel its all a wash, but you end up with a car you can't work on...

Not much. They replace the electrodes, which are completely recyclable at about a tenth the energy of mining new metal, and then safely dispose of the electrolyte. Yes, there is waste generated, but once properly reacted there isn't much toxic about the acid used in a metal hydride battery.

Not much energy is expended at all in terms of fossil fuels or otherwise. To be honest hybrids aren't any worse of better for the environment, in terms of manufacturing, than a normal car. Too much propaganda out there and not enough knowledge. Lithium batteries have huge impacts on the environment in terms of mining though they aren't commonly used in hybrids yet.

You are capturing a lot of the waste energy from braking. In town your mileage is much better. In town is where there are smog and pollution issues, so it's a win win.

As far as plug in hybrids go, it's actually much more efficient to burn fuel in a generator and then use the electricity to do work than it is to burn the fuel in an internal combustion engine. Internal combustion engines are between 25-40% efficient while turbine generators can touch 70-80% efficiency. Even if you lose another 30% of that energy (so 25% of original energy) in conversions, which would be high, you still are better off with a battery car over a gasoline or diesel care from an efficiency stand point. This is why a Focus on LNG still cannot get the mpg equivalent of a Electric Focus running on battery power generated by a natural gas plant.

Anyways, who cares. Jen will get far better mileage from the Prius than from an HRV. Period. The Prius has less drag and a smaller engine not to mention more efficient electrical systems in the car. Just that alone puts the Prius far ahead of the HRV in mileage terms.

Electric cars running on power from clean LNG or modern fairly clean coal generators will become common place within our lifetime. For people in town they make tons of sense. My father in law is looking at buying a Leaf right now. Not to mention he will not only save some coin on fuel, he will also get about $4K back from the government that he won't get by buying another Prius.
