Master Key Replacement?

Hi Everyone,

I just bought a used 06 PreRunner. It came with only one key. I guess it is a chipped key because it can start the engine (although the handle part of it is much thinner than my other Tacoma chipped keys).
But I want to buy a key that will remotely operate my power door locks. Do I have to get this from a dealer? Any idea for cost?

just did this yesterday. went to an independent toyo guy. great dude. he still wrestled $271 from my clutches. i got a new factory key, and remote fob.

dealership wanted $410ish. but their method is cleaner...apparently they program the chip to match the car. my guy, got the truck to reconize two chips. make sense?

 

OEM key blanks can be purchsed on ebay for about $15.00. You can also get a remote for less than $20.00 on ebay as well.

The remote will usually came with instructions so you can program it yourself.

The key will need to be cut and programmed for about $40.00.


This is all hoping that you have the keyless entry option in your truck already.

Oh, I hadn't considered that. Even though this truck has power windows and locks, there's a chance that it doesn't have the keyless entry option? Hmm. How can I check this?

Isn't the flashing light on the center console part of the keyless entry system?

 

I had a spare master key made. (no xtra fob) cost 49.00 from toyota parts, then another 59.00 to fuckn program! Made me feel better when my friends wife's honda pilot cost him 260.00 for same thing

 

That is the engine immobilizer that requires a chip in your key. My 2007 5-lugger didn't have that but the 2010 PreRunner does. Saves on ins a little but keys are expensive amd have to be programmed in.

Does the new key need to be programmed and cut by the dealer, or is there other places that can do it?

 

All of this brings to mind the black/grey key thing... we know the "master" key is black, but what the hell is the gray key? The manual calls it a "valet" key. It used to be that the valet key would do everything except unlock a glove box.

My valet keys will do everything. They start the truck, they open the doors. Even the dealer can't tell me the difference.

You guys know?

 

Sure, you can't use the Valet key (gray one) for programming, the black master key is needed for that.
They set it up that way so the valet parking the car can't make a duplicate and then drive away with you're rig

My fiance lost my spare set of keys (they were on her key ring which she lost) yesterday.

I was hoping they weren't chipped.

 

I would guess that a good locksmith would be able to do it if they had the right equipment.

My Taco is pretty standard issue (4cyl, 2wd) except it has the SR5 #2 package: PW, PDL, PM, cruise, remote keyless entry, along with some shiny trim pieces. All the fob does is lock and unlock the doors, and panic mode. Nothing more. The key is still required for engine starting and the keys are not chipped (I got some blanks off Amazon and they work fine after double-cut at local hw store)

 

The local ACE hardware has a sign by the door that says they can make/cut chipped keys.

 

This still falls under keys and such...
I had a 94 SR5 and a heavy keyring, so as we all know eventually the key wears out to the point that it cant be copied. Well I talked to a good friend who was a toy mech for my local dealer, and he told me that there is a complete record of your truck, including the number code to the keys,these were manual keys, fixed to the inside panel of the passenger door. basically removing that panel and you should know everything that is about that truck, and apparently toyota dosen't let that info out.

 

I always insist on 2 sets when I buy a vehicle. When I bought my 2013 Tacoma and found out they dropped the valet I made the dealer cut a 3rd key.

 

Good grief. My Taco only came with 1 black key, which turned out was not the master key. The dealer required that I drop the truck off for the day to cut and program a key. Originally it was estimated at $115, but now that it is a master key the price jumped to an estimated $260. Apparently they have to erase all the programming and reprogram that system. I need a second key so whatta ya gonna do?

Well, they just called a few minutes ago and said the tech was having issues with programming (the issue being the computer wouldn't take the new program) and they want to keep the truck overnight and work on it tomorrow. It occured to me that he had to erase the existing code and now that it won't take the new code it's blank and essentially won't lock, start, etc... I fear an expensive computer thingy replacement is coming down the pike.

Not a good start to my first Taco owning experience!

 

Holy shit .... Checkered Flag in Virginia Beach $115 ... sorry ... I normally hate those guys who post negative but this may save others some $$$.

 

Picked up Kate today with the new Master key. Got me for $251. They did a general inspection and the only thing they found was the front brakes need to be done (@2mm). Dealer quote was $350, Pep Boys was $125 cheaper. They also checked the frame as part of the rust recall and (no surprise) it's fine.

Keep track of your keys! Paying for a copy is expensive...
