    Ahh gotcha

It would kinda just be removing the running boards...the bumper would just be a visual thing.. Would I get a aftermarket bumper? Yes but you wouldn't have too.

    Lol, okay.

I'm going to make the first gen guys here sore but remember a 2004 is going to cost you a very pretty penny. I wouldn't doubt a really pristine one would go for over 10K. A new Tacoma, with no one's paw prints on it that will last for hundreds of thousands of K and hundred of miles, will cost you about double that in you go with the bullet proof I4 engine. If you were happy with the Yaris engine, you'll be ok with the I4.

Remember, anything you buy used has lost that much life off itself. So let's assume Tacoma's can go about 15 years or 400K on their original engines, on average. If you buy a 2004 with 150K you will, on average, get another 5 years of life or 250K miles for $10K. However, if you buy a new 2nd gen, you will get 15 years and/or 400K for $20K.

Not to even mention that 99% of the time a new Tacoma will be perfect from factory mechanically. I give you less than 50% odds that you will find a used 2004 Tacoma that doesn't have a major mechanical issue that will need fixing soon.

This is why, if you buy it and keep it, new really makes the most sense. Then again, if you are a first gen addict, then there is no hope for the logical answer to make sense :p.

BTW no offense to the first gen meant at all! :)

Painful to watch even, huh?

As I think about it more, it would make more sense to get the Runner for the low price it's at, even if some $ was needed to do a few things to it - ASSUMING we are comparing that option to buying a Taco that is equally as old for way more $$$ than what that Runner is priced at.

    They are identical on fuel.

Are they truly identical on rough roads though?

    I third the motion!

To be honest, Jen really just needs to write down here concerns, think about what she's most comfortable with, and lay some money down on a car somewhere.

I really don't think you'll spend any monies on that runner. Unless u want a new bumper. Erik can take those boards off and aside from that I don't really see any other costs.... What else did u have in mind??

Then again, what if both the Tacoma and 4Runner have major issues in the next few years. Let's say what happened to your Tacoma happened to the 4Runner and then the Tacoma blew out it's rear end or transfer case. Will you be able to lay out the $5k-$6K to cover those expenses.

I'd be a bit worried about carrying two older vehicles around. If one goes out, well murphy's law....

I know, that worries me some - the 2 older vehicles thing. BUT, as long as we had a firm decision made ahead of time (unlike what happened last December) about our specific limits of when to replace vs. when to repair, I think we'd be OK. Sure, anything could happen, but the odds of both fully dying on us at exactly the same time seem fairly slim. So if we stuck to our rule about repair vs. replace, then a commuter car would just enter the picture when one of those two left.

And that's where it'd be really important to me to know that the Runner could truly do ALL that the Taco could do just as well, so that we'd be covered regardless of which died first.

Sterdog does have a valid point though, but that runner had very few miles right??

It had ~120 or 125 I think. Which is a tad more than what I'd be searching for if I was actively looking for this type of vehicle. But this fell in our laps, and it does have some appeal to it in spite of the miles. The price is reasonable for it's overall condition - or so it appears!! :)

Sorry, I'm definitely always think of all the outcomes. Personally I'm a bit of a gambler. I bought two trucks hoping gas prices stay sane lol.

Oh....I was thinking it was under 90k for some reason. Still a lot of life left though. And you can't count on it dying at the mileage your taco did, that was a frigging freak disaster fur sure!

OK, so we've really narrowed it down it seems.

    It's either a $10K POS sedan with ~75K miles

    Or a $9K 2002 4 Runner with ~120K miles

    Or a $15K 2004 Tacoma with ~75-100K miles

    Or a $17K 2015 Prius C

    Or a $20K 2016 HRV

This is getting ridiculous

Me thinks I need a car research break for a bit!!! Maybe it's time to work on the gate for a while :D

It seems really your biggest hickup is the mpg's am I right??

How much commuting do you guys or erik really do? How much would u really spend or save? I bet its not a whole lot of a difference in the big picture.
And if ya bought brand new it'd takes years to recover the $$ through gas savings..am I right? Saying u bought a super mpg rig that is..
