Yeah, that's true. We don't really drive a ton of miles. Hmmm.

New adds on how many years though to a vehicles life?

A 11 year old Tacoma or older 4Runner is past it's prime. A new car or truck is factory fresh ready for you. That's where you get your money back.

Better mpg is just a bonus.

It all depends. Would you rather have a 4Runner with 90K on it that did all city driving (lots of stop start, low mile journeys that are tough on the engine and other parts) or one that did 150K all highway.

The whole mileage age argument is pretty dicey unless you know the history of the vehicle very well.

Sorry, I'm making more problems than solving them but it's something Jen should consider. If she can pull a carfax on the 4Runner sometimes, if it's flipped hands a few times, you can make an educated guess based on the odometer at sale what sort of driving it's done.

    OK, couldn't stay away!!

I feel very confident that it was very well cared for. The guy has receipts of servicing it at our local "good" dealer the entire time he's owned it, since 30K. Before that, a lady traded it in at a Lexus dealer with 30K. I imagine she wasn't offroading it. :D

    And he never did either!!

Although, I imagine he did a fair amount of city driving in it, with few highway miles. Hadn't thought about that.

No kidding, it may come to that in order for us to actually move forward with a decision!!!!!

Besides, look at you!! Even you can't decide between the Runner & Corolla, and you won't even be impacted by it!!!

have you completely forgotten what I said about the 4runner?

buy it, fix it up, and if you find its not what you want to keep, its now worth $3-$4k more then you paid for it to trade it in or sell to get something else so that's a free $3k to take off of the purchase price of anything you buy if you want it

This is sound advice. The 4Runner is an easy in, easy out, scenario.

no, I decided a month ago to do what I just said in the post above and you have months to drive the 4runner to decide if you need or want something different.

if buying new, then in that case I choose the corolla as my ONLY smart choice for the best value for the intended use. the civic wasn't a 4wd and you never died driving it so the corolla is the perfect "new" replacement for the exact type of use vehicle with great gas mileage

I'm still for the 'Runner. It has almost the exact same same under carriage as your present truck. It will do everything the Tacoma does...but with a better ride.

I'm sorry, but no one needs to talk themselves into a 5 year note on a new car. That age and miles means nothing to me. You can EXPECT that 4Runner to go 300k. The 3.4 motor is a proven power plant. The only reason its not made anymore is there is no way to make it run more efficiently. It wins because it can run for a very long time. Just look at the thread of how many miles on your Toyota.

The only question I would want asked is if the 4Runner was used for towing. That transmission was not built for heavy towing. They run just short of forever pulling the trucks.

Another bonus, as I've said before, you two know your way around these truck very well.

You had an expensive lesson with the Tacoma. l understand your worry. what happened to you is not a common problem.

I honestly expect to keep my spare 3.4 engine, taking up space in my shop for the next 10 years. I fully expect our Michigan winters will kill the body and frame on my present Tacoma. I'll be stuck with 2 spare engines.

Good luck with the hunt. I am thoroughly enjoying all the comments from you and everyone else.

    Later

    KO

I gotta ask, I just have to know and forgive me for getting personal. How long did it take for you to say "yes", when you got proposed to? There is no way that was a "Halmark" moment.:crapstorm:

You either make payments in parts or make make payments on something new.

That's how vehicles work. No matter how solid the engine or name brand is.

The only big difference is the commitment to an older car. Not loan means nothing is tying you to it. It's also worth almost base value so you can dump it at any time for a very small loss. In exchange for that flexibility you also lose reliability.

All the 1st gen guys can boast all they want about how reliable there truck is, but ten minutes on a trail shows you why 90% of guys don't run truck over 10 years old out there. Too much shit breaks.

I'm gonna just say we better agree to disagree.

One of my biggest fears is finding out I don't really like my new car. I'm stuck with it for the next 59 months. Its happened to me twice.

Once that new car smell is gone, and its gonna be gone pretty fast hauling the hounds around, you have to think if you really like this new set of wheels. Hopefully you do.

$120/month payments for 36 months I'm okey with that. I have real issue with 60 months. I want some time were I own the car, not the car owning me.

Gotcha. All that matters is how you remember it.

    On with the vehicle deliberations.
