OEM to Air On Board Fog Light Switch Wiring

While reasonably mechanically inclined, electrical has always somewhat puzzled and slightly scared me. It might have to do with a nasty tweezer + plug socket incident when I was 4 , but who knows?! Anywhoooo, I'm here for some quick help from one of the many electrical 'wizards' on this site...

Background - the bulb on my fog light switch no longer works. There is no Toyota dealership near where I live, and the shipping cost for that one stupid little bulb was absolutely insane. Since I was ordering a switch from Air On Board for an LED light bar, it was actually cheaper to simply order a new fog light switch from them at the same time.

Problem - I'm not entirely certain how to reconfigure the wiring from the OEM switch to work with the new Air On Board switch.

My apologies if this seems like a ridiculously simple problem/question, but if anyone can explain to me which OEM wires go to which Air On Board wires, I would GREATLY appreciate the help!!!!

Hopefully not being too much of a bother, but another couple questions... What is the purpose of this 1 amp diode that is to be installed on the red/yellow wire of the switch? How is it connected? Auto parts store or electronics store?

 

OP did you finish wiring this up? Did you figure out the diod wiring as well? I have the same switch sitting on my desk and would really like to get it done

 

I will be doing the same mod with an AOB switch because I'd like confirmation when my fogs are on (Plus the AOB switches rock!).
How did the wiring suggestion from caribe makaira work?

a diode is not needed... it is only required if you are using the head light or foglight circuit to provide power to pin 86 on the relay if a "negitively" switched circuit. The only way to tell if that circuit is "negitively" switched, is testing the wire with the headlight or foglight switch in the "OFF" position. you will need a voltmeter. with the switch in the off position, connect the ground lead to suitable ground point (battery ground if underhood).

Take the positive test lead and test the wire...

If you see 12 volts and it's the correct wire, turn on the switch - the voltage should drop to zero - this is a "negitively" switched circuit - diode required (if powered by either of those circuits).

A "positively" switched circuit will do the opposite.

 

Use diagram "1" on that sheet for your install.

 

I have not done this yet, tried to get some help from AOB, and got nothing useful.

Relay Harness
Harness - fused battery wire to pin 30
Harness - positive wire from LED bar/light to pin 87
Harness - Ground wire for relay to pin 85
Harness - Red/Yellow stripe wire from AOB switch to pin 86

AOB Switch
Switch - Red/Yellow stripe wire to relay pin 86
Switch - Green/Yellow stripe wire to a fused switched 12v source
Switch - Blue/Yellow stripe wire - use an add-a-circuit and tap the "Tail" fuse. this will light up the switch when you flip on the parking or headlights.
Switch - Black wire - chassis ground

 

Spent the better part of the day on Saturday using my limited experience with a voltmeter (and ultimately blowing the 5 amp fuse several times) until I figured out how to wire the combination of my AOB switches to the Spod wire harness. I sure do not want to do that again, especially when using the factory electrical system.

You could... as long as you still ground it to the chassis. ground on the switch and ground on pin 85 must be wired to the chassis...

Unless you need the switch to be dimmable.

its usually easier to find a grounding point at each end instead of running another wire through the firewall to connect them.

 

My switches are the contra V rockers. So the lower led is independent. So if I tap into a power and ground wire inside the cab to run the lower led they should be dimmable with what ever circuit i tap into. But if I was to run the ground from pin 85 to the ground for the switch then the upper led light would not be dimmable. Is this correct?

 

The way the switch is wired internally, the top light will only turn on when the switch is in the "on" position. it's not feasible to try and make that a dimmable circuit.

 

Perfect I am very clear now on how to wire the lower LED on the switch.

I guess my real question is this: From my auxiliary fuse box can i run power to pin 30, Ground to pin 85, and then just run another wire from pin 30 to the positive on the switch, and another wire from pin 85 to the ground on the switch. I am new to these relays and switch operation. Thanks for the help.

 

I just installed a Contra V switch and it works with the dimmer. I tapped a green and green/white wire on a nearby switch.
