installed volant cai, and bed cover . no improvment of gas milage

I recently installed the Volant cai with the scoop. At the same time I installed a tri fold bed cover . Both products claim better mpg , and mine has become worse . Any ideas ?

 

that's because cold air intakes don't increase mileage on our trucks

 

yeah I was sold when it said it I wouldn't have to change the filter for 100k and mileage improvements. Why would it not work on these trucks?

 

I understand that concept, just wondering why would not only Volant , but AFE and K&N all say there are increases and it actually decreases? I mean it dropped about 3 mpg.

 

The only way to increase gas mileage is via your foot.

Three styles of driving on this forum:
-Drive like grandpa or mirror the driving habits of any lame prius owner, go no faster then 55 on highway, absolutely no jack rabbit starts, and make sure to be "that guy on the road going wayyy too slow in the left lane" and your gas mileage will be 18-20+ combined.

-Drive like a normal person not concerned about what is in essence a gas consuming TRUCK, average 65-75+ on highway, a few quick starts here and there and you will average 16-18 combined.

-Drive like you stole it..... well its lower then 16.

 

Not much to improve over the stock intake, and Myth Busters did a show that busted the myth that driving with your tailgate down improves mileage. Best thing for mileage is adjusting your personal driving habits.

 

So what everyone is saying is to get a corolla if I want better gas mileage . I was going to buy a full sized truck , not a tundra , but the Tacoma was half the price . Now I know why.

 

I get 19.5 mpg in mixed driving. Not bad for actual mileage. I don't keep it under a certain speed and step on it when I need to, but not aggressive.

If you expect more than 20 mpg out of a vehicle, the Corolla is an excellent choice. There are few if any trucks out there (outside of base model 4-cylinders with skinny tires) that are going to top 20 mpg in the real world.

 

My best recorded numbers were just under 2 mpg difference after Volant CAI installed. Same stretch of road. No jack rabbits, coasting often. I often drive like a grandpa.maintain speed limit or 5 under. NEVER 5 over. Makes a big difference. Check your tire pressure and excess cargo.

Edit: I added magnaflow catback so exit pipe is bigger too.

 

Hasn't it been shown that a CAI can increase HP while burning more fuel? And making a warm air intake increases MPH with cost of HP? I think that's how it works.
I assume your issue is a heavy right foot since installing the CAI. there really is no point unless you get a supercharger or turbo and headers and exhaust IMO

 

Would disconnecting the battery and letting the system reset the parameters help? I never did unhook the battery during the intake install.

 

No. Your not going to gain any MPG with the intake.
The bed cover may get you .5 mpg maybe

Pretty much. Vehicles should be purpose chosen. And every purpose you chose compromises some other purpose in most cases.

If MPG and/or TCO for on road transportation is your prime purpose, you should never look at any truck. Period.

If you want or need some open bed cargo capacity, a 2wd 4 cyl base like mine is a modest compromise on MPG. My 20/28, AC on, legal speeds, is repeatable and acceptable to me.

I'm willing to be laughed at by the 'manly men' of trucking, because I care more about the truck meeting my needs than impressing anyone else.

 

get rid of the intake... you just lost hp and torque.

 

I'm in semi-disagreement with these other posts. When I installed my AFE on it's own, it didn't seem to make a difference and even felt like I also was losing mpg. I think it's because it requires extra 'oomph' to get the truck going. My commute doesn't vary and I would get 4 days of driving on 7/8 tank of gas. Once I installed the Intake Manifold Spacer, that all changed. I gained all the power back down low plus better top end because of the intake. I now drive 4 days and only take 3/4 tank.

Alone, the intake sucks. I pulled it out and the truck drove better stock. The intake + IMS made the truck better than stock. More power in the entire RPM range and I get better mpg than stock. I also have a tonneau cover and that alone didn't make much difference that I could tell.

 

I get about 15 without an S/C in the streets. It's my lead foot mod.

 

btw, I think the best thing that I did for mpg gain was the Crawford performance eco-block.
