Had my 15 Taco serviced for (free) this morning and I noticed they already have two Colorados on the used lot. I couldn't help but check em out. Eh....looks ok sans spare tire poking the person behind you at a stop light in the eye and overall fit and finish was NOT what I think they are advertising. Guessing the 16 Taco has little to be worried about; especially with the price tag on the GM's. FYI the Toyota dealer had one priced at 28k for a 15 LT access cab 2WD. I'll keep my truck.

You want the twins and others to do well if you're a Tacoma fan. If they do,it pushes Toyota to innovate and do more for the customer.

Agree.. Hoping it would push them towards putting forth a deezel, but doesn't look like it's going to happen anytime soon..

I nearly bought a colorado, and its a nice truck. Outfitted with the z71 package and similar options to the trd or, the prices are nearly the same.

I opted to wait for the taco for the toyota proven reliability.

Let's be honest. If the GM twins did not come out then the 2016 Tacoma would have been exactly the same as the 2015 minus a few more features like the did with the 2015 compared to the 2014.

GM comes out with this and Toyota has to slap together a somewhat half assed Gen 2.5

I sure hope the new Frontier and hopefully the Ranger adds some further competition forcing Toyota to come out with a Gen 3 proper.

Competition is good. I still think there might be a market. It won't be Toyota people. Heck, the 2015 sold twice as many in 2015. It will be Ford and Chevy People.

I know some think this was slapped together but Toyota has been working on it for years ahead and only brought it out when needed with more appropriate last minute adjustments....

It looks somewhat like the 2005-15 becasue of the loyalty to their customers. People are still willing to the 2nd gen because they are the same basic size and differe mainly by execution. The 2 nd gen was a marvolous success story that they are not going to abandon, but expand on.

Generation 1 was out for 10 years also. Seems like Toyota wants a 10 year life cycle for these trucks. Lets hope they go to a shorter cycle this time.

Since I heard about the '16 Tacoma I've been keeping an eye out for the GM twins on the road and I've only seen 1 Colorado (I see a lot of Tacoma's). I live in Houston, TX, where every other vehicle is a truck, so that is not a good sign for GM.

I don't think fit & finish, quality or reliability are all that close to Tacoma, and if left as is the sales numbers should stay the same. The advantage GM has is the upcoming Diesel. Great MPG's and torque (likely) MAY lure a lot of people who are on the fence. It also may be a complete flop because approaching 45k out the door for a midsize is pretty crazy territory. I know some people will pay for it, but whether people flock to it is yet to be seen. The thing would have to be a mini raptor for me to pay that kind of money.

So you are saying Toyota had the gen 2.5 planned out for years and just pulled it out when GM came out with the twins?

So what does that tell you what they think about their customers that they didn't offer the improved gen 2.5 a few years earlier?

Sucker born every minute? I hope not Toyota.

I have some doubts about the success of a diesel. With all the new emissions/def and the added expense I'm not sure they will be all that successful and may be more a nitch market. I've also been seeing less and less new full size diesels on the road. I could be wrong and am just speculating.

No..but they had several concept trucks in the works. Which avenue they decided to take depended upon the competition. If you think that they started building this thing after the twins came out, you are mistaken.....if the twins had taken a different approach, say, all aluminum, then toyota would have had to respond diffently. If the twins went the Ridgeline route, another approach might be used. It isn't any different then what car companies do. They also were not going to vary the truck substantially and walk away from the success of the 2 nd gen.

It doesn't even matter what the competition is doing. Toyota is production constrained so they target their existing owners looking for a replacement vehicle. The 3rd gen only needs to be an upgrade to the 2nd gen, which it is. Most owners, like 90%, will buy another tacoma because their existing tacoma worked pretty well. These buyers value "it just fucking works" over most other things. Thus it doesn't matter what the competition is doing, they'll buy another tacoma without even test driving the competition because the competition isn't made by Toyota. That's what loyalty means. Toyota knows this, GM knows this.

That said, clearly the midsize market is large enough that GM can sell trucks to everyone that hasn't preemptively decided to get a Tacoma. And it seems a lot of them are Frontier buyers. We'll see what happens when the Frontier can compete with GM, and Honda enters the fray.

A lot of things were predetermined years ago. The big one is the EPA ratings and how best to meet them along with making a competitive vehicle and one in sinc with the 2nd gen. It isn't like car makers don't have a long range plan. Is the 3G an upgrade of the 2g....well of course. Why abandon a success. The up grades though are just about everywhere.
