Click sound, won't start

First off new to this forum but have been lurking in the shaddows for a while!

I have a 1996 toyota tacoma V6 manual It has had this problem for about 5 or so months now when I go to start it it will just make a click sound some times it takes two or three tries for her to start up other times it takes for ever to get it started.... Every once in a while it will be in a good mood and start first try and keep doing that for a few days then go back to taking 15 min to get it started...

Also some times my stero will all be set back to normal like when I first put it in and have to reset all stations and bass... The clock has never been reset though but does go dim when it clicks I have replaced my battery checked my fuses and cleaned my terminals and tightend all screws from my positive wire all the way down...

Any help would be great

Sounds like your starter is failing, mine did the click thing when it died, or the electrical connection to your starter is loose.

 

How do i replace the contacts?

 

I'd start with the battery..... check & clean the connections on the battery first & foremost. Clean and make sure the connections are tight.

How old is the battery?

From there - check the electrical connections at the starter.

prob starter is almost worn out.

 

How is this a problem with the starter? You state that occasionally you have to reset the radio stations.

Something is causing you to lose complete power to the vehicle. If it was only the starter, you wouldn't have issues with the stereo.

I would start simple and check the body grounds.

 

that old of a vehicle and he already replaced the battery...the starter drawing too much amperage could make it seem like it was dead/no power.

 

Naah, that dog won't hunt. Problems with Toyota starters are never progressive. It either works or it doesn't. Change the contacts and the starter is as good as new. I've never heard of the windings shorting out.

His starter would have to be drawing the battery down to less than 9 volts to make the stereo lose its memory.

I wonder if that positive wire that feeds the fuse block is bad?

 

Poor grounds along with pitted contacts trying to draw through very small points .

Just all round old age combining to cause the buss voltage to drop below the threshold voltage to lose the presets as well as not crank

Then without being hands on it is all just a guess .

 

This thread is 7 years old! Hopefully he figured it out by now.

 

LOL. I feel stupid.

 

When I rebuilt my engine it did that. Forgot to connect the ground wire from the valve cover to the fire wall. As soon as I connected it, the engine turned over
