x3 for a Savage. Nobody has mentioned Howa yet, but they make good rifles. Vortex is a good start.

been looking at the MVP patrol in 7.62 also.
Not a big fan of the R700 from my experience with them.

Were it me I would be looking for a used rifle and scope. For a range toy remington 700 would get the nod. If you don't reload the .308 is the only way to fly as it has great factory ammo available for it. I would be looking for a used Remington 700 tactical. For a scope I would also be looking for a used one as well. Leupold Vari X III or a SS 10X from SWFA will serve you will. Look up Seekins Precision for a 20MOA rail and rings, Glenn Seekins stuff is stupid good. I figure depending on how cheap you find the rifle you can be in the neighborhood of 1,200.00 bucks. A dab of bedding to catch the recoil lug and a quick trigger tune (can safely be done if you are mechanically inclined (if not have a professional do it)) and you are there. Shoot the barrel out of it and have a new tube screwed on, order a Mcmillan A5 and you have a custom rifle that will do anything you need it to do........Blake

Jeff, Aero now makes their own AR10...and for labor day they are having a 15% off everything...you can get a complete AR10 for just over $1000. No optics, but if you like AR15s and want to get a 308, it's an option too.

I think I've settled on the following 4 models to seek out and hold/fondle/review/research

    Rem 700 SPS Tactical
    Rem 700 LTR
    Savage 11 Scout
    Savage 10 FCP-SR

Any reason why I should toss any of these 4? If so, replacement for the list?

    I love my 700 SPS

Heavy as shit but unbelievably durable, comfortable to shoot and affordable. I have one in both .223 and .308. I should be spending more on glass than I have but even so both are accurate at distance. Took my Javalina on my .223 at 318 yards this season at a brisk jog in one shot. Its quickly become my favorite gun to shoot.

Nothing bad to say about Savage but I would lean toward the Remington as the 700 has been tried and tested on so many fronts and not been found wanting. The only thing I would add: As stated above go shoulder one and see if it's comfortable. If none of those suit you I would also recommend looking into the Win. 70 Series if for no better reason than I own 3 of them (.243 .270 and 30-06) and all 3 have been dynamite for me. I only really like to push the .243 for any kind of distance (coyote gun) so that really isn't the best comparison. I just like them

Best of luck with whatever you choose and we will need PICS!

I almost bought a Savage shotgun but they are all made overseas now, at least all the ones I looked at, if that has any bearing for you.

My primary deer rifle is a Remington 700 ADL bought from Cabela's a few years ago packaged with their store brand scope (which I think was made by Nikon) for under $600 new. My buddy bought it to go out west for a hunt and sold it to me for $100 less than new when he got home. It was new minus an 800 pound elk

Tons of great options for you here from everyone but if you wanna go a little over budget you could always go
used Remington 700 SPS – no frills, just your basic rifle – for $500.
And add a accuracy international chasis
$800 you can purchase their AICS “chassis system” stock upgrade for the 700.
I have an AI MKIII and was strongly considering doing this method

Don't want to jack the thread but OP might be interested in 243 as well. Awesome caliber and multipurpose round! This interests me, building a 1000 yard 243 wow. What's the weight of the bullet? Can you tell me more about the build? Don't want to take away from the 308 in any way as we all know its capabilities. But a 1000 yard 243, tell me more.

The 243 is very capable of 1000 yards, however I would want an 8 twist barrel to fling the higher BC bullet offerings. The problem you will run into is that there are not many factory ammunition offerings with any of the VLD type bullets with higher BC's, so you will need to be able to re-load. Other than that the 243 would be my choice as well......

    None.... Yet
    I have a .308 Rem 700 AAC with a custom trigger and a Bushnell Elite 6-24x50(30mmtube). It's a great shooter.
One of my favorites is my Tikka T3 in 25-06 with a Leupold 4.5-14x50. flat shooting, light recoil, factory detachable magazine.
There's tons of aftermarket following in the Rem 700 series of rifles. If I were buying a starter rifle that I plan to customize, I'd buy a Rem 700

Why do you need to run a "hot" round down the barrel? The .243 with a bullet weight of 85 to 115 grains is more than capable of reaching the 1K line. No need to pierce primers just because of the distance. You can start a 90 grain Lapua Scenar .434 BC at 3000fps dial 32MOA and arrive at the 1k line still traveling at 1100fps and 277 foot pounds of energy The .243 is no more of a barrel burner than any of the rounds above that you mentioned, if one has any inkling of what they are doing. Tell me again how .5mm difference between a 6mm and a 6.5mm equates to longer barrel life.
