Go to SD Truck shop and tell James you're from TW and ask him if he can show you the steps.

IMO there's some things just to leave to those who know. I've seen how to build a 3rd but have had 0 interest in doing it myself.

Thats not going to happen. Insurance doesn't cover non-employees in the working areas. People that say they want to change gears themselves probably got a 1k+ quote and don't want to pay it

So true, sadly changing gears is one of the things that you just need to take to the shop

Shout out to Jason Speed Freek for hooking up my 2014 Tacoma. He installed a full OME suspension lift and UCA's. The truck handles way better than the stock TRD suspension, it looks great too!
Jason works on the truck as if it were his own and has great attention to detail, will definitely bring some more work his way, thanks again Jason!

Go join an RoP auto class. You're going to have a difficult time finding a shop willing to let you watch or help without charging you for it. There is an old saying most shops know, $50 to do the job $100 if you help $150 if you tell me how to do it. A shop is trying to get the job done as fast as possible usually while still doing it right so they can move on to the next one and actually make a profit (in California this is hard enough) and from my experience the people asking to help or wanting to learn almost always makes the job take longer to complete. People will argue and say they're going to sit there like a church mouse and not say a word, but inevitably they will eventually ask a question that makes you have to stop and answer, 1 leads to another, and yet another. That costs extra time, time the employee could be spending on another job, and if they're not charging you for it, it's coming out of the owner's pocket. It comes down to this, if you're really not going to say a word or get in the way then the information you'd be getting is no better off than what you'll find on youtube. If you're still determined to find a mentor to teach you first hand your best bet is a small one man shop or craigslist.

Isn't that kinda the going rate? I'd really like to do it myself but if I F-it up it will definitely cost me more in the long run.

The rate is closer to $2k if you're 4x4.

Changing gears aint for beginners! Quite a few things that need to be spot on in order for it not to grenade. Pinion gear setup needs to be set up right and then your backlash has to be set up to mesh properly for good gear pattern contact, as well as roughly .006" - .008" play, if you dont bad things will happen.

A 3rd member swap is no big deal, remove brake lines, 4 bolts on backing plate, driveshaft removal and then drop out the 3rd member, reverse for install.

To do the gears however is considerably more work. If anybody is gonna attempt it better do your research first, its not impossible but just needs to be right, if you get something wrong it might take a couple thousand miles but it will eventually fail if its not done to spec!

Anyway went to Pala raceway yesterday to go practice, wifey snapped a couple pics!

Finally nailed that triple jump out of the corner, just gotta commit, lol!!

Don't know if thats a bench job quote or not , & it DOES sound pricy but setting up a 3rd properly
takes some skill, knowledge, precision tools to set lash in all those gears & the preload on pinion as well, they're pretty intricate & have to be pretty much "dead nuts" accurate or it isn't going to last...

Man I should be on my dirt bike instead of messing with my truck. Pala is a nice track. On the note of messing with the truck what is the head gasket to get when upgrading to ARP studs on a 2rz?

oh i know, i have the tools to do it just haven't tried yet (doing it on my fj40 once the arb shows up) but for a taco parts for R&P and master bearing set is around 400 bucks. 600 for labor? general install time for bringing in a third is around 3-4hrs. I just feel people are getting ripped off if they are paying 1k. hell, you can find complete thirds with new gears for less then 1k

I'm sure prices are somewhat inflated because of being a "custom/specialty" application, I paid $200 & change for a complete bearing kit for my diff, no gears, you could add a couple hundred on to that if gears involved...
