Ive got a brand new 15 Pyrite Mica Tacoma with stock silver rims. I really like the looks of black rims, but as I just spent every saved penny on this truck, replacing them is not an option. Ive seen literally DOZENS of post about Plastidip for rims, and most of them are on POS ricers. Has anyone used this stuff, with success? Keep in mind, this is my FIRST new car..I dont want a cheesy looking wanna-be appearance. Has anyone achieved professional looking results with this stuff or does it always wind up looking like a second rate spray job?

Mine have been dipped since April 2015. I did a totally amateur job of it too. Most recent photo post car wash.

I've used it befor. On my hood and all 4 fender flares. Looked cool but I did it out side so it caught a lot of dust. I recommend you clean your garage out very well and do it in there. The paint lasted me 6 months befor I saw any significant dmg but it was hardly noticeable and with my procrastination peaking over time I didn't repaint it for another 6 months. So I'd say it lasted me a 1yr.

How did you prep them, where did you spray them (Indoors, outdoors etc) and how many cans did it take? Thats EXACTLY the look IM going for.

I did my valence over a year ago. Cleaned the valence really well just before (I want to say I used rubbing alcohol...?) anyways, painted it in my garage using almost a full can. It cleans up just like new to this day. I know it's not wheels, but that thing gets hit with bugs and stuff and still looks fine. the great thing is, if you don't like it you can peel it off and you are only out ~$20...and maybe a day of effort. No big deal

Washed my truck. Hand wiped down the rims afterwards. Wrapped garbage bags around the brakes. Sprayed 3-4 coats of plastidip on the rims. Did it on my garage and let each coat dry before the next.

There are numerous YouTube videos on how to do it.

Not on my truck, but dipped my girlfriend's SUV wheels and my boss at work drives a Trans Am with dipped wheels. both look great. One was done with a spray gun with the wheels off, one with a can with the wheels on. Both seem to be lasting, but the one done with the spray gun and wheels off does look slightly better.

Both on for 6 months, both look just as good as day one.

I went with painting my wheels - primer and bedliner with rustoleum 2x clear to keep them looking nice.

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/my-build.372728/#post-10209983

I had a bad experience trying to remove plasti-dip from my rocker panels - tedious even with WD-40 and a tooth brush. Pressure washer might have made a difference lol. Then again maybe not. I was just using it as a mock up for maybe painting them in bed liner and clear coating them like my wheels and grill. Decided against it for the moment until I get glass fenders and bedsides.

Yes use plastidip, there's another brand at home Depot that does the same thing but the quality is cap and it doesn't spray even. Plastidip the best.

I have done my wheels twice and I hate it and regret it every time. The only reason I bother is because it's removable. Well, it is.. but it's a pain in the ass. I still have patches on my wheels where WD40 didn't remove it and neither did 4000 PSI at 200 degrees from a pressure washer.

I wish I had used paint in the beginning instead of $75 worth of peelable rubber coating. Paint would have been cheaper and longer lasting.

Most of it peels off, but the parts that don't rage me to no end. I had to use a scotch brite to clean up my center caps and it took me about half an hour of constant scrubbing. Never again. For now they will look like patchy shit until I have time and energy to care, but I'll never use it again. On something flat or gently curved it isn't bad, but on wheels it sucks.

Those who love it on their wheels probably haven't removed it twice. It's easy to apply, removing it sucks.

I did mine about two years ago. I did have to put a few patches when I had some tire repairs done, but that's about it. Originally did it because I wasn't sure if I wanted them to stay black or not.

I did it on my jeep fenders and grew tired. Before peeling it I sprayed a new very heavy coat, let it dry a day and then it came off alot easier than the first attempt to peel it

    This is truth.

To the OP, I've seen enough peeling plastidip wheels to not use the stuff. I've used actual paint on plenty of sets of wheels however. Prep, prep, prep. If you prep them good, get some nice coats allowing plenty of time to dry in between, and get a nice clear coat, they won't chip or peal, and they'll look great. This plastidip shit is for the birds. The only good thing about plastidip is that it's removable, otherwise paint is better in every way.
