Our Bailey just got diagnosed with a torn ACL. We have another visit Friday with her regular vet for another opinion and to discuss options. Really sad, and really expensive!

Anybody have any advice or tips that have been in these shoes with their dog? She will be 5 years old in December.

Yes it is expensive, but also highly successful. Your in Ft. Riley, lots of good dog vets around. Check with K-state, that's about as good as it gets.
5 years old, she's got a lot of life left. Spend the money, you won't regret it.

You have my location confused with someone else. ;)

We are definitely going forward with treatment, just wondering if anyone has had real success stories with it or real nightmares. She's always been a very active dog, and I'm worried about the surgery, the recovery (5-6 months?) and reinjury or a tear in her other leg which I was told is practically likely?
We weren't able to get her into her normal vet, so I don't have a clue if the place we took her to was just trying to freak us out a bit and have us in their hands or not.

They quoted a minimum of $4000 for the surgery and said our veterinary office uses them for their surgical needs, our actual vet says they charge $2-2500 and they don't use them, they have a surgeon that comes into their facility and does the procedures for them. So, not entirely sure of the truths from half truths.

Sorry I quoted the wrong post. I'm around a number of people that hunt and field trial dogs. These dogs are bred for energy and run hard. Torn ACLs are not unusual. Yes there is a recovery period but I'm not aware of any surgery failure among thosr that did it. Your second price quote appears to be in line with our midwest costs.

We started to let our 7 month old Bloodhound sleep in our room/bed. She's potty trained now so she isn't a problem in the house anymore. She wakes up at 3am to use the restroom and wont go back to sleep after most nights. Don't get me wrong. She'll lay in bed but constantly roll and turn and "sigh" until I get up and rough house with her for a bit. :)

We had to have this done with our old shepherd. One year after we did the first hind leg, he needed the surgery on the other hind leg. It was expensive and the toughest part is the putting the dog through the surgery and recovery with no way of telling them it is for the best. Our dog was around 5 when he had the first surgery, and he lived another nine years after the surgeries. To me it was worth every penny. Including a pic from around the time of his first surgery. :)

@DCSBFTMFW great info here. It is common that when one leg is done, the other will tear due to the dog compensating.

Our pit mix that had been rescued off the streets and then given back to the foster/rescue organization by 2 separate families for being too much for them to handle. Do not let the innocent look fool you! But, we wouldn't trade her for anything.

The day we brought her home.

Almost a year ago I woke up to a dog on my doorstep who was so malnourished she was about dead. I took her to first pet in Chandler Az who was amazing and gave me everything I needed to keep her alive and get her back up to health. I decided to keep her even though I already had 5 dogs to begin with and I have no regrets as she's one amazing little dog.

    Her name is Pickles.

When we found here she was under 1lb (roughly .75)

We took her to First Pet yesterday to get weighed and she's now 3.7lbs! Woke up this morning and saw that my little Pickles got a spot on First Pets FB page.

[IMG] So congratulations Pickles. You made it!
