Hey guys, tried to look for a thread about this already and couldn't find it so maby you guys can help me. I just got a tow hitch receiver for my truck off of Craigs for 100$ but it didn't come with the 7 pin harness. I looked under the rear end of the truck and I don't see any where the 7pin harness could plug into unless I'm missing something... if the stock prerunner has a place for me to plug that 7pin into, where would it be? Or if it doesn't have home, how would I go about wiring it up?

And on a side note, how much do dealerships charge to install the 7pin harness for you?

    Thanks all

The 7 pin harness plugs into a ~ 1x1in plug up between the spare tire and hitch along a cross member. Though if your truck didnt come with the tow package that wiring might not of been ran.

I'm working on something. I'll get a write up done by October. My plate is currently full with my wedding and honeymoon. Remind me in a couple weeks.

Just a note, you don't have to drop the tire to find the plug. It branches off the main harness that runs along the frame rail. If you don't have clearly visible plugs under there then you have to use my method.

Etrailer.com has a very helpful website and all materials you will need to add the wiring. Note: if you don't have the tow package you will be limited to popup campers for towing.

Thanks. I'm just getting this tow hitch all set up to pull car dollys. Small cars, civics, hatches etc.

Thanks sandman, I will be sure to remind you. I won't be needing to tow for a good year so I got plenty of time. During this time I'll get all the stuff necessary together.

    Thanks guys

This will surely work but will most likely die in a period of time. If you need to pull something now go for it. I had 2 of them and am not buying another.

My method will be more of a factory install.

That's a 4 pin harness only good for lights. He said he wants a 7 pin . It will require a brake controller bought separate. And a 7 pin socket . You can cut the end off the 4 pin harness and add it to the 7 pin socket . Then add a brake controller later. The brake controller will use 1 pin out off the 7 pins . Then the 4 pins for lights. So 2 left over usually for charge only good for 20 amps mostly used for lights inside trialer or to charge backup battery for emergency break away brake controller. Its a little tiny battery for controlling the brakes if the trailer falls off the hitch well driving.

Thanks lol it'll give me something fun to do this weekend. I saw a 7pin harness with a 4pin harness on ebay for a good deal. I'll probably pick that up for now and just screw around with it.

Mounting the circuit breakers for the charge and brake controller on the fender well close to the factory one is easy and you can run a supply wire from the battery.

Sandman: first time I've heard of aftermarket stuff from Etrailer failing.

That's got to be a joke. I was referring to that style anyways, I have no experience with Etrailer.com. That style "controller" box seems to short out easily if water or other means gets in the 4pin plug and shorts it.

I found a picture I took on my buddys truck. These are the 2 plugs you will have if you had factory wiring for the harness. The big one is BE1 Connector.

Question. Did you just buy the tow package for 100 or the bumper and tow package?

No. I just bought the tow hitch for 100, bare. There's a pic in the beginning I'd this thread of the tow hitch.
