Opinions on a cummins swap for a 2013 Tacoma? Would a 4bt be sufficient or is there a different motor that would fit better?

4BT's have been done before. I've read one or two builds on the Cummins forums. Loud as fuck and you will be lucky to get everything in there for less than 10K in parts, or 30 K in labour. Not to mention registration issues in most states people have if you do it yourself. The one build I ran into took the guy over 3 years before it was all registered properly and running okay, and even then it wasn't fast, powerful, or worth his time in any way. It just made a racket and looked interesting.

You'd be better off importing an older Diesel Hilux or finding someone who has done a Diesel swap but doesn't like it and taking it off their hands for pennies on the dollar.

Most conversion companies use the Toyota 1KD-FTV engine with the automatic A750 transmission when they convert Tacoma's. It's a much quieter and more useful engine. Then again, I think just to get a newer used one over here is 10K alone.

I've just been wanting a diesel Tacoma since day one. I figured I'd make mine into a project truck. I've seen videos of older Tacomas with 4bts but I didn't know what would be best for the '13s. I agree, they are loud! That's why I came to this sight in hopes to find opinions for a cummins that won't be a racket and a waste of time.
It's just going to be a personal truck. Was planning on swapping it myself and the budget I was going to adjust as I seen prices and got opinions of what I'd need.

It will be quite the project. I'd make sure to have something else to drive while doing it. Maybe even finding an older second gen to do it on. Not to mention I'd do a ton of reading on the Cummins and diesel forums. All the conversions are pretty much the same. Just the amount of custom parts and mounts are different to make everything fit.

At the end of the day whatever you build may not be totally drivable or easy to register, so you have to go in accepting this could be a three or four year project worth over 10k that could just fail.
