I ran over a huge muley at Bowman, North Dakota biggest deer I ever killed with my F-150 (and it got 3 altogether in 10 years) - an N.D. highway patrolman showed up and asked if I wanted it. I pointed at the Wyoming plates on my truck and asked if that was legal - and he said it was my choice and he could sign off on it ........ or he would have the local shelter come and get it. So it depends on the state..... Don't know if Wyoming Game and Fish would have agreed....... but whatever...

He then commented that I was lucky the air bags didn't deploy, that the year before, one of their patrol cars had hit a big deer, the bag clobbered the patrolman who then ran off road, down a bar ditch and nailed a power pole. The secondary collision killed the driver. Because of that he said that they could elect to have the frontal bags disabled and take their chances on the belts alone - a personal choice they had to sign off on.

I know at least in Colorado if a call is placed to the DOW they can and will give you a roadkill tag in this type of situation should you desire to claim the animal you hit. It will require inspection by a DOW official but they usually sign off on it

Yep. In KS cops will give the driver a salvage tag if he wants one. I know a couple people that did, and won't again. If a deer is hit hard enough to kill it, there ain't much good meat left.

When I was a kid the highway department made sure it was fresh, had it cut up, then it was given to the local schools. Then we hit that critical mass of Californians fleeing Marina Del Yuk where their howling about feeding kids roadkill had an influence. The best source of clean, low fat, protein money can't buy was tasken off the menu. Dumbasses.

Good thing that was one of those little bitty Texas whitetails. A big Midwestern or northern whitetail would have totaled the truck at the speed you must have been traveling.

Edit - I just read the post about the truck being totaled. Holy crap! How freaking fast were you going?

Plastic SUCKS. No deer should ever total a pickup truck. Ever. WTF? :( I must have hit half a dozen whitetails in the first decade I was driving and nothing was even close to totaled.
