No I'm just being sarcastic! Toyota cheape out in areas they shouldn't have and jacked up the price way too much.

I suspect they had/are having problems with their LED tail light supplier. Either that the ones they produced for the tacoma were of inconsistent quality or they too frequently had issues requiring a lot of rework and expense. That would explain why they went to LEDs in the 2nd gen then back to a mix of LED and incandescent, and now just bulbs. There's a reason why high quality LED light bars are so expensive.

When LED lights are as cheap and reliable as bulbs it makes sense to always use them. The problem is you can have cheap, or you can have reliable but not both right now.

LEDs in the FMVSS regulated lights are not really an advantage either. The super high "light density" of a LED is lost because physical space is not at a premium and they can legally only output so much brightness. On auxiliary/off road lights they're great. The DTRL trim lights are LEDs and space is limited in that design so it has to be LED, hopefully they're reliable.

if the look of your tail lights is important to you then no matter what kind of tail light they designed you would replace them with an aftermarket to give a unique look.

Lol, you're suppose to say "No I won't buy a Tacoma, incandescent bulbs are one step too far!" Now Toyota knows they set the value bar perfectly.

Biggest problem for me is no amber rear signals. Unsafe and lazy.

Yep. I don't really care too much about LED... I just think the 2016 tail lights are ugly.

Looking closer at the tail lamps I'd assume the clear lower portion is the signal lamp and hoses clear bulbs for reverse similar to my Nissan.

My 2009 DCLB TRD Sport has LED tail lights and have zero issues with them.

If the 2016 trucks do not have LED tail lights then it's simply a case of Toyota sucking more profit because they know the Tacoma people are chumps and will buy and pay big money for the right to own one. Any other reason is simply a POOR and WEAK excuse.

Maybe this is like a restomod Tacoma using drum brakes and old school bulbs EXACTLY like theri trucks from 20 years ago...

I can only HOPE that the first few months of these trucks are old school bulbs and they somehow have supplier issues on real LED tail lights. Why would they design this thing like a truck from 2008.

I'm not sure it is, otherwise Ford and GM Trucks wouldn't have red turn signals. Worse yet, the signals and brake lamps are a usually a shared bulb. In 2015. In a $30,000+ vehicle.

    Absolutely inexcusable.

Rear turn signals need to be red or amber in Canada/USA, they do not need to be amber. There are some Toyotas that have used red in the past, though amber is more common for Toyota. Both are acceptable legally, though I do prefer amber myself as it stands out more. Red color is more commonly used by domestics.

How Toyota decides which vehicle will get LED tail lights is hard to decipher and mostly unknown. Often times in recent history it will be when a model is refreshed.

    2007-2009 Camry: Bulbs
    2010-2011 Camry: LED
    2012-2016 Camry: Bulbs

    2003-2005 4Runner: Bulbs
    2006-2009 4Runner: LED
    2010-2013 4Runner: Bulbs
    2014-2016 4Runner: LED

    2006-2012 RAV4: LED
    2013-2015 RAV4: Bulbs
2016 RAV4: ? (LED I believe, but am not sure)

My point is, it happens, it's not super uncommon, and I don't know why they do this, but they do. Also sometimes one country will get LED while another gets Bulbs, wouldn't it be cheaper to do the same lights for both, I guess not.

Front corners must be amber as red can only face the rear and sides from the rear. Red is also allowed in all directions for emergency vehicles, fire, ambulance, and police. Also, clear or white can only point in the direction the vehicle is traveling. Amber can be used in any direction for any vehicle (like an amber spinning top work Truck light)

Well the incandescent bulbs are better for offroading. They don't get clogged with dirt. You know, just like the drum brake holdover....:D
