What are people trading to buy a 2016 and what are you getting for it?

I was offered $23,000 for a 2014 Access cab with everything but the navigation package. I turned that down, I'll do much better selling it myself even after the tax hit. Plus they would only go $500 under MSRP.

What irked me was we were only about $1000 away from making a deal that I was willing to accept.

    I. Never. Ever. Trade.

My beaters I give to those in need of transportation, or sell at some budget friendly price.

My decent rides sell for a good price, almost always to the first looker, minimal to no negotiation. If I have what they want, and they've been shopping, they know they've found a great example when they see them.

I also can't recall the last time I advertised I had something for sale. Usually I've got folks asking me to let the know when I want to sell, so I make a few phone calls.

I wouldn't necessarily say that......it depends on the situation.

I had a Dodge Ram 1500 (4 years old) that I attempted to sell privately. My last price tag on the truck was $19,000 and I had it listed for at least a month.

I went to the Toyota dealer to look at Tacomas and wasn't necessarily ready to buy one yet..... The sales guy offered me $19,000 as trade towards my tacoma on the spot. First time I've ever had that kinda trade value...but hell, I'll take it. You never know....

My 2014 only has 4100 miles, I figure I can get $28,000-28,500. I can go as low as $25,500 and almost beat their deal, but won't. I think it's best to wait until the dust settles, the sales manager made it sound like he was sitting on a rare prize or something.

I am trading in my 2010 Toyota Matrix I got what I wanted for it, but it was a total hassle. I walked away from the initial trade offer they presented.

Used to be my mantra as well but now that Washington state subtracts trade in value from the from the sale price of a new vehicle to calculate sales tax it's kind of a wash. Taking my trade at 20k is essentially the same as selling private party at 21.8k.

2009 Honda Civic EX. It has 64000 miles. I bought it new using "cash for clunkers". I'll sale it privately for $9900. They offered $8000 trade in.

All well and good if you structured your negotiation such that you 'know' your getting real 20k, not just a line item 20k.

Most trade allowances are overstated quite a bit to make the buyer/trader happy. Meaning you paid more for the vehicle you were buying that you might have, just to offset that trade.

    Try this the next time.

Go make your best 'cash and carry' deal. No trade, no financing. Know your numbers in advance, get to the price you're actually willing to pay. Get it in writing.

Come back the next day, and tell them you're ready to make the deal, but you've changed your mind on the trade in part, that you now DO want to trade in. If they shuck and jive to 'start over', it's because they don't want to tell you what your ride is worth to them. I'll wager if they are straight up and do give you a number, it's gonna be a number lower than wholesale, a true 'trade in' value.

Once you work through that, the tax off sets may or may not be so interesting.

Side note, flip side of the coin. I've bought a few cars from individuals who were buying new cars. To preserve their tax edge, the salesman gave them a 'paper trade' allowance in the amount that I was going to pay them for their car. I then 'bought' the car from the dealer for that price +$50 for paperwork processing, which the seller paid me back. They saved on taxes, I got my price, we're both happy. No, the dealer didn't make any $, but they did it just to make their buyer happy and get the deal closed.

I've also had someone use the method above and learn his 'real' trade allowance, then sell me their car for that price + their tax benefit, which made them whole, and prevented the dealer from making more $ on the whole transaction. (he was PO'd at the dealer). That particular car I drove, modified and raced for 12 years. One of my best rides ever! And yeah, anytime you can buy a low mileage, well maintained car for under wholesale, you've done well.

I have always wondered this. Can you trade in more than one vehicle?
