So I've been thinking.... Tacoma with a V8 option.

So I'm wondering if in the near future if Toyota is going to offer the V8 as an option in the Tacoma? Most of the other vehicle manufacturers offer a V8 option in their midsize trucks.... Why not Toyota!!! Does anyone think eventually this might be a reality?

part of me says, have you seen the gas prices? Why would Toyota make a vehicle with a bigger engine.

The other part says, what is the limiting factor of the Tacoma? Why do people buy the Tundra? Would the people that are no longer buying a Tundra(because of gas prices) buy a V8 Tacoma?

I don't think the engine is the limiting factor of the Tacoma. Maybe a V8 with variably active cylinders. Maybe only have 4 cylinders running at highway speeds. In short, I don't think we will see a V8 in a Tacoma. I hope Toyota proves me wrong.

no... it defeats the purpose of having a tacoma, if u do that then expect a V10 for the tundra

I agree in some aspects.... But seriously what does Toyota have to lose by offering this option? If you dont want the V8 then you just don't get it... I like the power of the Tundra but IMO its way to big!

The cost of design, tooling, production, marketing and a huge, unprofitable support tail if they don't sell. In terms of HP/weight, taco is already off the chart for a truck.

    I doubt it.

That's what the Tundra is there for.

What do the consumers want? V8 tacoma? Diesel Tundra? Diesel Tacoma?

How about moving towards alternate fuels instead....I don't think diesels are as popular as they were a few years ago. The only real benefit to a diesel, is you can make your own biodiesel with free used veg oil from restaurants. Sooner or later, that's gonna catch on and even the used oil will cost ya to get it.

Think about it... What exactly is the benefit to a V8 tacoma? Racing would be the only real benefit (IMO). Surely it's got more power for towing & hauling but will they include a heavy duty transmission & axles to handle larger towing capacities? And not to mention, the smaller truck with smaller overall weight isn't gonna be good for controllability for towing like a larger Tundra would be.

How are other company's doing it then? And as far as Tacoma being of the charts in power range thats not true... Example, Dodge Dakota is a mid sized truck with a 4.7 V8 and 305 HP! Do you know what you have to do to a Taco to get that type of HP out of it?

The Tundra Keeps it's 5.7 V8 and the Tacoma uses the 4.7 V8..... Any one who says that the V8 in the Tacoma is a waste and no one will use it is miss informed. I know company's like URD are making good coin on mods for more HP. A fully Supercharged and moded out Taco is lucky to get 300hp and there are plenty of people dumping lots of money in their trucks to achieve HP gains.

Toyota doesn't want to compete with itself. A V8 Tacoma will compete against the Tundra, especially since the new Tacomas look to be about as big as the old Tundras. Hell, my Tacoma has a higher towing capacity then my old F150.

Years ago I was looking at different trucks and considered the Dakota. It was available with a V8 with not with the Hemi. When I asked why that was, the response I got was "The Hemi is huge and won't fit in the engine compartment of the Dakota." I knew this was bullshit because the Durango was available with the Hemi.

Truth of the matter is that the engine was the main factor that distinguished the Ram 1500 from the Dakota. If the same powerplant was available in the smaller, less expensive truck, people would stop buying the bigger one.

This doesn't apply to 3/4 and 1-ton vehicles, obviously, but that's also not a market where Toyota is currently a player.

Actually, you're misinformed. This topic has been beaten to death time and again.

BTW, every single person who's dyno'd their SC'd Taco has gotten over 300hp.

I'm misinformed because the Topic has been beaten to death or its a waste of money? And the point of the matter is that a Supercharged V6 Taco does as well as a stock V8 would being doing give or take. Not to mention you lose reliability and a grip of cash. If the V8 option was a waste of money then I do not believe the aftermarket for supercharges would be as big as it is.

I just think that the 4.7 in the tacoma would be a good option because the Tundras have the IForce 5.7

DC 4x4 v6 auto taco weighs 4080 lbs and has 236 hp that equals 17.2 lbs for each hp to pull around.

Crew Cab auto v8 Dakota weighs 4859 and has 302hp that equals 16lbs for each hp to pull around.

So yes the Dakota has a SLIGHTLY better hp to weight ratio....but not enough to justify the R&D required for a new truck that is probably not going to sell anyways. Very few people would buy it. Get another 20 CRANK hp going to that Taco with intake or exhaust and it has a p/w ratio of 15.9 lbs per hp. That's how close these numbers are.

The V6 Taco has almost the same power as the dakota. It's msrp is 25k not 30k. It is also rated for 16/20mpg not the 14/19 of the Dakota.

Then there is my personal belief that the interior of the Tacoma will not fall apart and start rattling after you go over bumps like the dakota.

Oh and if anyone wants to check my numbers I found them all on yahoo autos. With the exception of the power to weight ratios which was found simply by dividing the weight of the vehicle by the hp rating number.

I'm not sure I agree with that. The people that supercharge tacomas do not do it because they NEED the extra power. They do it because they want to play with their toys. If they had the v8's they would still be wanting to supercharge them.

I never said it wouldn't be cool....but cool and what sells are two different things. Toyota is a business and has to make money, not just make what's "cool".
If you want it that bad do a swap. Find one in a wrecked 4Runner and grab the wiring harness and make a swap. Can't be that hard.

I never said people supercharge because "They Need It". People definitely SC their trucks because they like to play and you can never have enough HP! I have seriously looked in to the SC system because I wanted the added HP of the system but then opted not to because of the headache involved. But if the V8 was an option I would have payed the extra money and never thought twice about it...
