I completely get what you mean. First thing I said when I saw the HP was "DAAAAMMMMMMNNN" I wanna test drive one for myself and see what's good and what's not. Plus over the next few months I'm sure TSBs and suck will be out to fix minor things since it's a new model.

I can see what he says about the power.

I put it in manual shift mode and it pulls way high up in the revs. A definite pull around 4k.

That's fairly normal for a NA 6 cylinder.

OP have you ever driven a 2nd gen tacoma? If so how do the powertrains compare?

I guess everybody will have to drive one to see for themselves. I know it differently doesn't sound like a truck. Sounds more between a car and 2nd gen engine

No I have not, unfortunately. My only comparisons are the Xterra, 4runner and RX350.

Cool review, I have two points I'd like to mention. As others noted, it sounds like you experienced engine braking. As far as the JBL system goes, I think it's a huge upgrade from stock. It's the perfect amount, it's not obnoxiously loud when you pull up to someone with it at a stoplight, but it cranks in the cab. The subwoofer is the right amount, as it's not enough to rattle your truck loose after a few years but it is enough to fill the cab with a lot of hard hitting bass. Maybe you didn't fully stretch its legs out to see what it can do. I've noticed a lot of people always complain about it, maybe they got a bad one. Mine kicks hard, always get compliments on it.

Take off response is a question of torque, not so much horsepower, no? The torque numbers were underwhelming.

As to those saying "it sounds like a car engine," what the fuck. Worse than the belligerent shit that plagues the diesel threads.

Tacoma is a good truck, but it isn't full size capable. For legitimate truck needs, it falls short.

If he thinks Ford is a soccer mom truck perhaps he should hop in my 2015 F150 V8. Damn near 400 HP and Torque, near 6 seconds 0-60 mph, and doesn't sound like a 4 banger at all. Actually, it sounds close to a muted mustang engine, because that's what it is. It does "truck stuff" far better than any Tacoma. It's just not nimble enough off-road.

Oh, and the Ford gets 20 mpg overall...

Can't wait to test drive a 2016 in Canada. I'm sure it'll fell like a slightly upgraded 2nd gen, because that's what Toyota targeted and it will sell well.

I'll have to check out the way it drives. This is exactly why I have "contingent upon test drive" specified on my deposited order. I have hopes that it won't be like he says, but I'll see. Plus, the JBL thing is a matter of perspective, I'm sure. Coming from a 1998 Accord as a daily driver, something tells me that the sound system in the truck will be better...

This differs from the first impressions of those who drove the truck from Fastlane Truck and others. There first impressions have all been positive. It would be difficult to imagine that it have such drivability problems as one thing almost all Toyotas have in common is, their motors, transmission perform co distantly from one vehicle to another. This is an important model for them. If anything, they chose the 3.5, and it is the corporate 3.5, because it is smoother then the 4.0 of the previous generation.

Amazing how much weight people are giving to the OP's impression all things considered.
