I like the email/internet approach! Same I used buying my '04 Highlander, last new I bought. I just did a 'cash and carry' approach. I recommend everyone try that as well, then still offer up your trade later, to get a real sense of what they are paying you (not allowing, not giving, but actually paying)

In my '04 example, my 14 yo ride being replaced would not have drawn much value, since they tend to use book guides, (although some of the sales team would have lathered up over it, for personal gain), so the tax edge was, well, lean. (6% sales here)

However, it was one of those cases where I made a couple phone calls and it was sold, for retail level pricing, within a week. While I might have only been a few hundred ahead, knowing the buyer would enjoy the car and care for it well was worth a lot to me.

You speak of reducing tax exposure and tax edge can you elaborate on that?

Most sales managers do like to sit on rare prizes. You will ZERO problems unloading that 2014 in a private sale.

You pay tax (in Fl at least) on the sale price of the vehicle you are buying. That taxable price is reduced by the allowance for your trade in.

That is the tax edge/benefit/advantage/break/savings. It's real money.

My point is that if you knew what you were really being paid for your trade, and it's decent, you can still sell it on your own for more that that number plus the tax savings.

Problem is, most of us don't know what we are really being paid for our trade. Just what they tell us.

As you can probably imagine, when I say it's a long story, it's a REALLY long story.

I have a wonderful wife. My wonderful wife and I have a wonderful girlfriend. We all see each other exclusively. That's the gist of it. Again, it's a really long story.

Well I would call you a lucky bastard, but in your case I have a feeling luck has nothing to do with it.

    Kudos my friend. Rock on.

Oh...but I'm getting a new frame for free, so it'll be good for another 10 years. Let's see what your Ford looks like in 18 years.

2012 trd sport dclb. I couldn't convince anyone to trade me for a 2012 to 2015 6mt trd offroad aclb, so 2016 quicksand 6mt it is. I'm scared to see how much I get screwed here in SK, Toyota dealers here tend not to deal and give stupidly low trade in values.

Hopefully you're not switching to an F-150 expecting better MPG or more power. My work truck is a 2015 F-150 4X4 5.0L and it averages 13.5 MPG and feels slower than a 4.0L Tacoma, especially with the A/C on or driving against the wind. On long highway trips it gets 17 MPG. The 4.0L Tacoma I had consistently got 17 MPG in town and 20-21 MPG on the freeway, and it was even the dreaded 6 speed manual. A few of my coworkers have ecoboost F-150s and they're getting around 11 MPG. Our 5.0L F-150s have been very reliable, though.
