My only big concern is that they may drive similarly to the GM twins with regard to acceleration, gearing, shift points, etc, since I really didn't like that. I truly hope that isn't the case...

The 2015 Canyon engine feels the same way. It's the way of the world to meet EPA regulations.

I bet the door handle didn't come off in your hand, the driver's seat didn't jump it's track, and there was no heavy vibration from the hood latch at highway speeds.

+1. The 3.6 in the GM's sounds horrible. Like a Honda with a fart pipe. And don't drive one with a 2.5, you can walk faster

Makes me lean towards the manual tranny even further, but I'll still have to test drive both. It's scary to think what the 4 cyl with that tranny will feel like :annoyed:.

Good review. Nothing said that would sway me from taking my order home, especially engine sound ( I would prefer to hear no engine sound) I made sure to listed to BOTH JBL systems in the 15s before ordering the JBL SUb which lies flush behind a "grill" behind the left rear seat)...

IMO The SUB made a huge difference with today's Recordings that can get down to 30Hz Bass. There was no noticable roll off at 40hz however listening to seventies music, the sub was not worked at all. The dynamic range is simply not there on the bottom end. After my "test" I felt the JBL was worth the additional cost to me especially since my back seats will be down 100% of the time. It will not shake yours or your neighbor's car windows. If one wnats that they will need to get an amped pro setup

I had three 2nd Gens and one first Gen so I am looking forward to driving mine when it arrives....or a test if they get one first. A new car test drive is tough because we don't know how it will break in,

No mention was made of interior noise.

I moded 1999 Taco so much it had turned to Land Cruiser
Of course it differs from impression presented by people who got payed by Toyota
OP is correct, and thats how car engine in the truck feels like. People should not be surprised. I bet first guy who takes this engine a part will find that this is glorified 2gr-fse with Chinese made heads.
It was clear, that once truck hits streets it will became a disaster. Just wait when guys who did not got invited to Toyota event get their hands and start reviews.
Turd is out of the bag, and no stopping now.

Thanks OP for the quick review....

OP - I BET you test the JBL with FM radio or XM? These sources suck ASS as always. next time bring a NICE recorded disc (USB drive 'may' do it).

The truck is TOO new, it needs to learn your driving style over time (All new gen Toyota/Lexus engines do that).

Your family's 4Runner has a very similar engine as the Gen2 4.0 Taco, you can use that as a comparison.

Pretty sure you weren't buying a new one either way. No one would base their buying decision on a review by someone that admittedly says they aren't that knowledgeable. Thank you for your contribution though.

Do you know how to reset this? I hate the way mine shifts. I want to reset it and have it learn again.

Do you have the Rockford Fosgate stereo in your Xterra? If so, how does the JBL compare to that.

Wonder if the OP had the time to fiddle with the EQ settings on the JBL system. When I first heard my 2015's Entune Plus (non JBL) system I thought it sounded like a transistor radio compared to the Dennon amp'd system in my '93 pickup. Changing the EQ on the 2015 make it *much* better, though still not quite the same as the Dennon.

I would not be surprised if there is more headroom in the back in a version without the sunroof.

The money saved from the soft redesign + $2k price increase = happy Mike Sweers.

I tested the JBL using the Bluetooth connection and streaming music from my phone via Spotify. Doing the same thing on my dad's RX350 sounds great. Not so much on the Tacoma. Granted, I was only able to sample one acoustic song and one electronic song (plenty of bass)... but initial impression was that it was a wimpy sound.
