Shouldn't technology actually make vehicles better? Computers do all the work for the engineers, robots put the things together and before long we will even have computers driving the things for us.

The more tecnology the bigger risk of complication. The components are not as simple as they used to be.

One opinion that's never changed (with me) is the best vehicle I've ever owned. It was a 1984 SR5 4wd, long bed regular cab, 22R/manual. The truck was bullet proof, simple, reliable, cheap to operate, and didn't have one single "take back to the dealer moment" in it's entire 200,000+ mile life. In the days since then, I've owned 3 more Toyota's, a couple Fords, 3 Chevy's, a Dodge, and one more Jeep. I've noticed that with each new vehicle, the over all quality and reliability has gone down. It may be a result of increased "complication" of new vehicles. It may be an acceptance of lower quality by the American buying public. It may be the huge increase in numbers of vehicles produced by individual manufacturers these days. All I do know for sure is, my latest Tacoma is FAR more reliable and of better overall quality than the previous Dodge and Chevy trucks I owned. There are things I'd do different if it was me designing new Tacoma's, but I'm still satisfied with what I got.

Vehicles of today are, in the general sense, far more reliable than those of 30 years ago. Maybe "toyota pickups" are one exception, but the nature of the vehicle itself is also quite different.

    It does
But it also opens up the door for more systems to fail.

I had an 87 4Runner sr5 I sold with 285,000 miles,No problems. I had a 1985 4Runner sr5 I sold at 215,000 miles (should have kept), only problem was the back window switch. I had a 87 xtra cab sr5 that was a great truck also. No problems. I should have kept them all. I bet they would have lasted longer than my current 2011, and I with the price I paid on the gen2 Tacoma I could have made them nicer.

My 2013 I bought brand new off the dealer has been the worst truck I've ever owned. Gutless, cant put anything in the back without it struggling, can't modify anything without my extended warranty being null and void, can't get Toyota to actually fix ANYTHING. Shit, I bet I could have it show up on a flatbed with the drivetrain exploded and they would say that it is within Toyota's spec.
I bought my Taco based on the same reason the OP did. Resale value, reputation. Unfortunately I kick myself every day for trading in my 06 Colorado.
