It's sign of times.... You get car enthusiasts who don't know what engine braking is (and who probably have no idea how to drive a manual transmission), or those who believe engine braking does a damage...

Its amazing what you learn with an engineering degree. But yes its amazing what people who get on the interwebs without schooling believe.

    Too few to list.
Only way to tell if you like it is to drive it. The 2016's just started to arrive at several local dealership. I think I'm gonna test drive just so I can compare to the 4.0 with vvti and dual vvti.

    YRMV....

When the cylinder goes off....pressure in chamber >> crankcase pressure, rings curl down. Intake stroke....chamber pressure < crankcase pressure. Rings curl up. How your rings get broken in initially determines the wear pattern, and continued use or overuse determines the longevity even further. Ever see a vehicle with MT that had specific instructions NOT to engine brake in the first several hundred miles? I have.

Engine rebuild at 100k from engine braking.. thats comical. I'm with you though in the sense that you can over do the down shifts to utilize engine braking. When slowing I normally downshift once, twice if coming from 5th, (never into 1st) and then use engine braking and regular brakes until I get to ~1500 rpm and put it in neutral. Where I use engine braking the most is in moving traffic.. I never sit on the clutch or clutch in to brake, instead I just leave it in gear or down shift and use engine braking as necessary.. this reduces clutch actuations and wear and tear across the board in my opinion.

Gotten off topic but oh well.

I don't see how compression alone (which is what slows you down during engine braking) causes any more wear than the mixture of gasoline and air exploding in the cylinder.

Its not the compression. It's the high vacuum on the intake stroke from excessive rpms trying to suck way more air through a closed throttle.

Like I said....YRMV. Exactly how long does an engine last? who knows...I don't, you don't....

Exactly how long does a clutch bearing last? who knows...I don't, you don't....

Exactly how long will a guy drive a car that's burning oil or squeaking down the road with a noisy clutch? who knows....

    YRMV.

Doesn't change the fact that high vacuum situations puts more wear on rings than not going into high vacuum situations at all, and running torque through gear pairs in the opposite direction puts loads in the opposite side of the normal bearing load axially and radially and changes the wear on the tooth surface.

My last taco had 225000 when I sold her and didn't use a lick of oil between changes and I engine braked more than I cared to. Two of my autocross cars both starting burning oil prematurely...wonder why that happened with so much time spent engine braking for racing purposes.

You want to buy a new one with the same issues as the first and second gen? o_O To each their own.

Not saying it's all just the engine braking...what else is harsh about autocross as far as the engine is concerned? full throttle off throttle full throttle off throttle.

Are you saying full throttle is the only thing that wears out engines?

Oh, yeah, that proves it. Totally stastically relevant sample set. I bet at least one of them was a Subaru, and therefore we can conclude Subaru makes crap engines.

I don't know what rock you guys live under that you've never heard of this. You guys are taking this way out of proportion which means you really don't understand much about mechanics. You guys are trying to imply that saying something increases wear equates to something being completely destroyed or unusable. You have no concept of relativity and qualitative comparison.

Its amazing how many outspoken uneducated dweebs are on TW compared to all the other forums I've seen.
