You could remove that and just direct mount the plate with 2 screws. Not that that would look all that great either, but at least you won't constantly be unintentionally rear-ending every car you approach.

The truck, license plate mount, the grill or that protuberance anti pedestrian bar?

First month of ownership... This month I'm removing front air dam, and also Rhino lining the bed.
Get a custom bumper. Problem solved.

.....Methinks it is designed at the perfect height to take pedestrian's knee-caps off?!....

...but that should keep the stupid bastards from wandering out in front of your truck again!

That pedestrian bumper is to snap their legs and put them over the hood instead of under the vehicle. The entire hood is above all parts of the engine so they dent the hood and don't smash their head

Given that trucks don't have to have 5 mph bumpers, that license plate bracket is the only thing protecting the grill when using the parallel park by feel method.

Yes, we all know everyone loves and wants to protect that grill from damage.

...Yeah....but they might still mess up the windshield....I figured that's why ALL the new models now have a skid-plate and raised clearance....so the dumbasses could just slide under the truck and out the back?...

...I mean....let's face it....going over the hood could still mess up the paint job?!....

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/i-wish-this-was-coming-to-america.378928/#post-10396956

This is a repost of a thing i wrote for another thread back when there weren't a lot of details about what that thing was.
    --------------

Yeah this is about right. I found a research paper from Honda proposing a design for a SUV pedestrian safety bumper.
"A front bumper system for use on a Sport Utility Vehicle was designed by Honda R&D Americas, which meets the conflicting requirements for both pedestrian safety and 5 mph impact performance."

Looks similar to the one on the front of the Tacoma.

While digging into this I came across a NHTSA paper showing the results of simulated leg impact testing. I suspect the point of that ugly chinstrap is to be able to hit a fake leg at 25 mph and have it cradled lovingly by the front end, imparting no crippling deformations or severe accelerations to the pedestrian. Much like in this collision with a CR-V.

Not like any of these, which impart enough deformation to snap a femur.

I like how the wranglers bumper is particularly effective at breaking legs. The wrangler does have a saving grace on offset impacts though. The leg hits the tire which absorbs a lot of the impact. Although you'd probably immediately get run over by the tire lol.

You can read the paper for the details of the testing. The new tacoma bumper is ugly as hell but it must work pretty well if they stuck it on there anyway.
