omfg!

i was talking to my wife on the phone this morning while she was driving to work (she was using a hands free blue tooth) and, over the phone, i hear this loud BAMB!! i asked her what that noise was and then she started crying and said that someone just hit her. then she said that she had to go. i was like, "wait!! are you ok?" then the phone went dead.

so i am sitting here at work wondering where my wife is and wondering if she is ok (i know she is on her way to work, but i dont know exactly where she is). i keep trying to call her back, but all i get is her voicemail. my heart is racing like crazy and i am wondering if i should call 911 or not, but if i did, where do i tell them to look for my wife?

then about 10 minutes later my wife called back and told me that she was ok... WHEW!! she was then able to tell me what happened. she was stopped at a stop sign when this older style suburban rear ended her at 25-30mph. i thought, oh fuck, her car is totalled (she drives a scion TC), but, luckily, the visual damage is only slight scrapes to her bumper.

the lady that hit my wife said that she didnt want to go through the insurance companies and that she would pay for any damage. my wife has never been in an accident so she thought that it would be ok to do that. i told her NO WAY!. i have been in enough accidents to know how stories can change weeks after an accident and proving who was at fault then can be impossible (even if fault seems clear). even though the visual damage seems minor, we have no idea of any structural damage that there may be. and structural damage can lead into the thousands of dollars to repair. and in no way are we going to get stuck paying for this lady's mistake.

anyway, bottom line, my wife is ok and her car is still drivable. it was a scary few minutes for me... what a way to start the day

Sorry to hear. Glad she is ok. I agree, tomorrow this lady will change her mind and then you'll be in court. Always get insurance and try to get a police report if possible. Best of luck. Glad to her the wife is ok!!

no cops, but my wife got all this ladys info. i hope this goes well.... it seems striaght forward. my wife was stopped and this other lady rear ended her. i dont know how you could deny those events.

 

yeah, but won't the insurance company require a police report to determine who was at fault? my grandma got hit head on in a parking lot, no cops were called because the guy said it was his fault and he'd pay. it bloodied her nose from hittin the steering wheel and cracked her front bumper. well the guy changed his story like you said, so when she turned it into the insurance they wouldnt do anything since there was no police report. thats how it was in wv though, not sure how it is for you

Please tell me she took photos or something?? Cause it's VERY easy to deny it if there is no police report or any other info/proof of the accdient.

My wife got our Scion into a slight fender bender....It cost 3 grand to get the body panel replaced. ALWAYS always get a police report if it's possible. When it's a couple 100 bones..People usually deal. WHen you get up to a grand...people get freaked out.

no, she didnt take photos. but her proof of the accident is the damage to back of her car and obtaining that ladys info. why would someone give up lots of personal info if you werent in an accident?

i know, i know... it still doesnt beat photos and a police report... grrr....

I can't imagine how stressed out you were waiting to hear from your wife. Glad she's ok.

 

Call the police right now! You need to cover all of the bases with insurance and the law. She might have neck and back injuries that will not show up for a day or two. You donot want to have a situation where you are not covered because the insurance company wants a report.

I'm pretty sure in California the law states you are required to have the police come if there is more than $500 in damages.
I suppose you would have to guess at that part but no matter what it's almost always at least $500.

 

X3........and if body structure seams behind the bumper got pushed then you probably have leaks waiting to happen & who knows what else. Not sure of the laws where you are but here, if both vehicles are driveable & no ambulatroy needs then the cops will just tell you to exchange info & go about your business, which sucks & sets you up for all these loophole fuckins that could go down.

 

True, but at least there is a record of the accident, that should cover you. If you want a report number issued, I believe that they have to provide it.

 

$750. And you're supposed to report the DMV if over that amount. Police reports are never required. Insurance companies don't HAVE to have them to determine fault, but they really make for a solid case.

edit..police involvement is only required when there is injury or death involved...but not for minor fender benders

 

....and, If you have the other parties insurance info, you should call them ASAP and file a claim.
