What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

Some sweet GearWrench metal arrived. Been waiting like 20 years for a nice wrench set.

Ill be honest when I did my 4wd swap I cut a slit in one of my boots, had it on for for like 80,000 miles never had any issues. I would just check it for play and keep a watchful eye on it until you can replace it

 

I'll tell you replacing one sucks because finding a press that fits it properly is impossible. But they are a lower stress item so it's probably not a huge deal if there isn't any play.

We could change it together when I'm back over there, it's a pain but it's doable in an hour or so.

 

I got a pair from Amazon for about $28.

 

Looks like drivers side front diff/cv bearings is gone and im leaking gear oil real fast. Im in a small town with no internet for the time being. Does the ecgs 7.5" clamshell tool work for first gens? (seen one for sale that said it was modified for 1st gens) Also is it worth going with their bushing even though the needle bearing lasted 20 years? Wont let me see faq on my phone.

 

You sure it's the bearing and not just an axle seal?

 

Very sure. i know this isnt a common problem on 1st gens

 

I agree, the needle bearings shouldn't cause leaks. As it wears, it causes vibrations. At certain speeds.

With that said, the ECGS bearing was a great investment for me so far (5k miles). I could grab the drivers cv axle shaft and noticed a bunch of play before replacement with the ECGS bearing. Zero vibrations under 60 mph.

 

Drain and filled transmission fluid. Took out 4.25qts and refilled same. Checked condition of rear diff and all is good in the world.

 

Im going to run 4.5" bumps. Its going to be close but it should work. Might have to make bumps taller i guess if it won't. Or get 12" shocks

 

They do a better job at dampening and controlling body roll when mounted closer to wheel. Wheel travel is more relative to shock travel. Right? If you where going for purely flex you would want them closer to center of diff.

That sound deadening really helps. Put it on the floor of my truck and it helped with road noise for sure.

I like my hearing. No thanks.

 

When I ride in anyone else's car I can't help but comment on how quiet it is.

 

Just riding in a car in general, feels like im riding in a high dollar bmw compared to the truck lol
