    Hopefully this week I am ordering the first stage of my lift, 5100s. Immediately following this I think I am going to buy tires and then go on to continue my suspension work. I am gonna run 265/75/16 on the stock Alloys.

    Which tire do you guys prefer? I am looking at the BFG A/T vs the BFG M/T. I do wheel my truck and so I do need an aggressive tread pattern. The thing is, I don't play in the mud very much. My entire thinking behind the Muds is that I would get better traction off road with them than I would the A/Ts.

    Another aspect besides traction is ride comfort and MPG. I hear the M/Ts make more noise, have a worse ride, and will bring your MPG down more than the A/Ts. Is the extra traction really worth it? My truck is a DD and spends most of its time on pavement. I don't want to sacrifice to much on my road comfort.

    Hell after typing this I feel more inclined to the A/Ts. :rolleyes:

    I have the BFG ATs. Even those add a little xtra road noise.

    If your daily drive is important to you - go with the A/T's.

    MT's are nice on-road when the roads are dry, but they aren't that friendly on the wet stuff, especially in a pick-up truck with not a lot of weight in the bed. They can get squirrelly in the rain paticularly on-highway.

    As for ride feel....well, I never noticed much of a difference. Noise? They hum a bit but nothing even noticable to the cars beside you.

    If you're looking for some aggressive off-road meats, you're better off buying a completely different set of wheels & tires (cheap stealies) and find a used set or cheap set of M/T's ....and swap 'em on when you go wheeling. That way - you save your daily driver wheels/tires from scratches, gouges, slashes, & flats.

    Seeing the third gen section forced me to get a Ford...
    i've got the mud-terrains on my DD and i love em. there is a lil road noise and all, but they carried my happy lil prerunner ass through the trails in uwharrie....unless something drastic changes, i'll be continuing to buy them or upgrade to the mud terrain km2's

    for all terrains, you have to consider nitto terra grapplers and toyo open country at's (very identical, same general company), great riding/wearing tires and priced extremely well. i also like the dick cepek fc2's :D
    bfg at's are great, but theyre one of the heavier tires out there, most expensive... and me personally, i dont like how they measure up, they seem to be skinner and shorter then all the other tires as well due to their design and in my experiences, they kick up the most rocks and once you ride them for a couple thousand miles, the wet traction is horrible.

    as for mud terrains, maxxis buckshots are an excellent candidate, great ride, one of the better tread life MT treads and also hard to beat on price. id stay away from any pro comp tire, they are hit or miss as far as quality.
    tons of MT tires out there with just as good a characteristics of a BFG at a much cheaper price.

    i used to be a "bfg only" type guy, but after trying many other brands, yeah theyre a great tire but definately not the best when you factor everything all togethre.

    Why doesn't Nitto make a 15" Terra Grappler. I wanted to try the Nittos, but had to choose an alternative for 15" wheels.

    I was stuck for a long time on the wheel tire decision because the Nittos were calling my name, but I wanted 15" wheels. I'm not dissappointed by the BFG AT, but I'm not particularly blown away by them either. Although, after 6k miles, they don't show even the slightest bit of wear.

    i love the terra grapplers when they have a thin sidewall like a 60 series or so or smaller on an 18" wheel of the like.

    I would go with the ATs. They are an all around better off-road tire than the MT's. MT's look cooler and are more aggressive, but they only benefit you in the mud, and there are much better mud tires out there.

    AT's are better for sand, rock crawling, snow/ice, rain, loose dirt, compact dirt, and road. They have more surface area for contact patch, are cheaper, quieter, and you will get more mileage out of them.

    I wheeled the shit out of my old 95 Toy and tried about 8 different tire combos, and BFG AT's were my all around favorite.

    Now if you are going to "purpose" wheel this thing, we need more details.

    go with toyos. the weight on the 265/70/17 is like 39 lbs. the bfg 265/70/17 can weight up to 55 lbs!!!

    Thanks for the info.

    I would go with a second set of wheels and tires but I have absolutely no place to store them. :(

    I had been considering Cooper STT but decided I like the look of the BFGs better.

    I'll look into those Buckshot Mudders. I remember hearing good things about them somewhere.

    I just got a set of the Cooper S/T's for my taco... 275/70/R17's with white letters out. So far I'm likin' the ride and they get tons of compliments from the other taco owners where I work.

    I used to want BFGs on my truck...and then my dad had a set on his silverado...and all 4 were defective...and it took him close to 2 years to get everything straightened out with BFG and get 4 new tires...and the new ones wont balance right either

    so...i moved on...i bought a set of Trxus M/Ts which are considered a max traction not mud terrain...

    offroad...great tires...hooked up on everything
    onroad...hummed LESS than new bfg mts...siped to add traction in wet conditions...

    they were tough to keep balanced as they were VERY heavy (54lbs a tire) and the tread life was about 30K


    After those i went with Mastercraft Courser M/Ts...ive had them for approx. 20K now and can barely notice the wear on the tread...they make some humming but its nothing awful...ive had these tires balanced MAYBE once since i bought them and theyve stayed balanced...wear is even and slow...i can probably milk 50K more out of these tires...seriously

    and theyre cheap...i think i paid $600 for all 4 in 265/75/16 2 years ago

    respectfully...i disagree with putting rock crawling in that list...i wont argue with any of the rest of it because well...they may very well be better...but you'll RARELY see a crawler on a/t tires...they arent made for that...
