New to toyota, but looking at it for my next vehicle. That said I just saw in a post below that they make a off road in 4x2.

Does that still have the crawl control switch they demo in videos?

What is realistic price difference between 4x2 and 4x4?

4x2 is good enough if another snowpacolypse hits the south all ice laden?

Well first of all, welcome. second (be prepared its gonna be long winded) I joined the Tacoma world at the back in Jan 2014. I bought a brand new DCSB 4x2 pre-runner, with a 4cyl eng. One week later northwestern Florida gets 1/2" of ice and everyone lost their freaking minds... Im originally from the north and started out driving on ice so i was out there pulling 1/2 ton pick ups out of the ditch. that 4 cyl 4x2 did everything I asked of it and then some. I paid about 28k for it because It had the sr5 appearance package and roof racks and all that crap. Anyways, after joining tacoma world I found that for a slightly lower price I couldve gotten a non-TRD 4x4!!! the top of the line 4x2 is about 4 grand more than a middle of the road 4x4... so to answer your question, it all depends on what packages you want they are pretty close in price. Oh and I traded that pre-runner in because I just had to have a 4x4. the local honda dealership gave me 30k for it before we even discussed my wifes care... so really... you cant go wrong

Ah..so Def 4x4 then. I only made it through last snowpacolypse bc I had fwd. We've had several black ice days since 99. Only 3 that were thick and lasting.. took 16 hrs to get home that otherwise in no traffic is an hour. :/

    Good post "Tonka"

With all due respect, selling the "Off Road" in 2 wd is a marketing ploy to get we guys in the southern areas or flatlanders or in town to buy a cool truck we will never drive in deep snow or off road. They are fine in light snow and dirt roads that only require ground clearance but the locking rear diff in the 2 wd is only marginally more helpful then the limited slip that comes standard.

The base 4x4 is head and shoulders better then any pretend OR in 2wd. As far as snow is concerned, it's all about tires and experience first. After you have snow tires and experience, THEN 4 wd becomes awesome in snow and on ice.

Without good winter tires and/or experience, you are a babe in the woods and you should stay at home when it snows. You could hurt yourself or someone else. Any discussion about driving in snow without including tires with good snow traction and experience is superfluous . Drive trains included.

Driving in the snow is so much fun. Wish it snowed where I live.

Driving in snow can be fun under the right circumstances

When you gotta get somewhere and its really nasty out, snow and ice can be downright scary

Regarding 4x2 in the snow I usually keep my truck in 2wd unless it is really nasty and it does fine

A 2wd/rwd vehicle can handle mild snow fairly easily

I don't think 4x4 helps anyone on ice. I feel.it can be more dangerous. Overconfidence is bad when you're driving. 4x4 doesn't stop any faster on ice. In fact it's heavier so may take longer to stop. Snow is a different story. But if you're planning on 4x4 on the chance of an ice storm I wouldn't bother. I live in new england and 90% of cars off the road in winter during icy or snowy conditions are AWD or 4WD. again overconfidence.

I agree. The best vehicles in slippery conditons are AWD cars.
The truck based drive in Tacoma's can put you into a skid quickly on ice when turning. About the only time 4 wd helps me on ice, is just to get moving. After that, it's. PITA.

That's the mile and a half road I have to drive or walk daily just to get the mail.
If it doesn't snow where you live and you think you would like to drive in it for fun. Let's swap homes for a week during the winter.....I could use the break, you could use the fun. You can play with the tractor when the truck won't get you out...don't worry. It has a heated cab and will get the inside temps up to 40 degrees when it's zero outside...have fun !image.jpg

Haha that looks so awesome.. I realize snow has its down sides and it would likely get old quick but for me its special because I never get to experience it.

It's a great place to live on the side of a mountain next to a lake where the only way in is a one lane dirt road that is snow covered 5 months out of the year. The good side is, you can jump on your snow mobile and ride 150 plus miles over the trails to Canada....if our 200 inches per year isn't enough snow.
