Turbo performance diminishes once heat comes into play, simple as that. Oy might beat thec larger engine the first round but on as series of let's say 3 hot laps it's going to fall off.

I'm all for a hybrid powertrain myself but I'd rather have it in a car personally. People have been speculating that the FT1 could have a hybrid powertrain with a KERS like system but its all just rumors. IF the FT1 hit production in its current form with a 450hp+ hybrid powertrain I would jump all over it but I think it would be $100k+ which puts it way out of my price range. It's still hard to tell what Toyota will actually do at this point, some think the FT1 is still years out and a Supra successor is right around the corner and others think the FT1 is the Supra successor and will be $60k. The ladder sounds fantastic but also very unrealistic.

I think you nailed it. I think they should call it the Asskissin' 3.5, because, Toyota is apparently trying to kiss the EPA's ass... along with Ford, Dodge... well, you get the idea.

Back off topic ... I test drove a TRD Sport today. I'm new to trucks and have only driven a Camry hybrid and Subaru Forester for almost the last 10 years. I have to say, I loved it. The seats were more comfortable than I expected, given all the chatter about lack of power adjustments and being close to the floor. I felt high up, but at 6-0 didn't feel like I was pressed up against the roof. The truck obviously felt large (the lame front scoop made it even more so) but manageable and the engine had good pickup (though maybe a little less than I expected/hoped). Acceleration and shifting were extremely smooth, especially compared to my wife's POS Forester.

I thought dual-zone climate control was standard across all packages but the Sport I drove didn't have it. That leaves me concerned about the Off Road, which is the package I'm aiming for, as that's an important amenity to me.

The dual climate comes with the premium technology package.. Which includes the rear cross sensors, moon roof, and top shelf JBL sound.. I'm sure there is more I'm leaving out..

Ah. Thanks for clarifying. I don't think I've seen that delineated anywhere else.

Im sure im not 100% correct.. But I do know there is a tech package and a premium tech package.. the tech package from what I understood, comes with Entune, and the Premium Tech Pack comes with JBL, moonroof, color matched rear bumper with rear cross sensors and some other items... At least on the TRD OR DCSB.. I wanted it for the JBL upgrade but passed because I didn't want the moonroof.. Again, I could be wrong, but this is what I was told.. I think the tech packages vary from DCs to ACs..

BS. Did you read what I just wrote, or do you just like to throw out simplified nonsense? You're only example doesn't even include NA vs turbo trucks, they were ALL turbo trucks. Not that it would matter because the issue would still be one makers design flaw on cooling, not an indictment of the whole technology. You do realize that virtually all engines in machines that actually do constant heavy work are turbo right? Heat diminishes all engines' performance, the key is to keep it cool enough where that is not issue in expected use, and this would be true whether it was NA or turbo.

But you also have allocation issues right now where they are not shipping certain combinations. So, from a practical standpoint I suspect that with certain models you have to get the technology package if you want JBL just because they are not making the non-tech JBL trucks.

Even with the Premium & Tech. Package, JBL is still an option.

Except they could have. The four runner 4.0L has 270 HP and 278 lb/ft. Why the hell not use that engine in the Tacoma 5 years ago?

In the motorcycle world, when you give it throttle it transfers weight to the rear wheel, hence increasing traction. I don't see why it would be different in a four-wheel vehicle.

Um my example was na vs turbo... Chevy 5.3 and didn't 5.7 were not turbo last time I checked. They were put against the turbo 6 in the f150. All I was getting at is when with technology to help make these smaller engines perform. They have to work larger to accomplish the task. This new 3.5 has to rev higher to match the old 4.0.. That 3.5 is working harder. Yes I understand most machines that do a lot of work are turbo but now were getting into commercial diesel engines and what not.. Very different then passenger vehicles.

I think it was logistics. 4Runner (& motor) are built in Japan. Tacoma motor is built in the US. One wouldn't think it would be that difficult to change US production to make the dual VVT-i version as well, but that's the only reason I can come up with.

Otherwise, it would make no sense at all to make two slightly different engines in the same plant.
