Where is oil filter location?

    Is the V6 oil filter now located underneath? I do not see the oil filter in the engine compartment pics. I sure will miss the easy to access filter on my 2nd gen Tacoma.

    Wow seriously? Wtf toyota.. In my experience these are not very easy to get off. Used a wrench I got from walmart on a friends camry and it barely worked, couldn't get a solid grip at all. What do people use to grip them appropriately?

    Yep, same thing as on the 5th Gen 4Runners.

    It's a PITA, won't lie. I've found that a 3/8" drive will get it off, I think I've only ever got the drain piece off once. Toyota, or Matco makes a specific oil filter wrench to get it off but good luck breaking the drain piece free.

    When you buy the filter it'll come with 2 "O" rings and a snap in tool that'll go in where the drain bolt is (if you can get that bitch out). The way it's supposed to be done is you take the drain bolt out, snap I a little plastic piece that'll drain the oil from the filter cap. Remove filter cap with specific Toyota or Matco filter cap wrench, remove filter element, clean up residual oil and remove "O" rings from drain bolt and filter cap, oil new ones and replace, screw on filter cap and snap little metal tab into place, reinstall drain bolt ensure oil is drained from pan and drain plug reinstalled, fill with recommended oil.

    Wonder if Toyota will sell me whatever their service department uses. The drain bolt should be easy enough if you have a large ratchet with lots of leverage, its the "filter cap" I had problems with. The walmart wrench I used didn't get grip for shit and barely worked.

    Well sounds like Toyota uses it on a lot of their cars.. Tacoma, 4runner and Camry at the very least so I wouldn't be surprised if they all do. Such a terrible design compared to the all in one, screw on *metal* oil filters on every non-Toyota car I've changed the oil on.

    I've used it befor but what I ran into is the drain bolt is so tight in the filter cap that I can use a 3/8" drive and take the whole thing out. Oil goes everywhere when it's done that way but like I said, I've only ever got the drain bolt out once.

    Yep. This is how it goes for me. Drop skid plate, grab oil bin and slide it under the oil pan. Remove drain plug and drain out the 6.5 quarts of used oil. Grab a beer, surf TW, grumble a little at what I have to do next. Replace drain plug with new gasket, relocate the oil bin under the filter cap, set out newspaper around oil bin, grab the 3/8 drive and loosen the whole filter cap, avert my gaze to something else in the garage, take off filter cap as slowly as I can (by hand now) and curse a little at the mess it makes and the fact my truck just about bukkake'd me. I've got to the point now it makes a little mess but still one none the less

    Canister filter? I hadn't realized Toyota started using these. Disappointed. Not as good as the self contained systems that store the filtered particulates outside the engine in the filter itself. This ensures that they are completely removed when the filter is changed. Bummer. :(
