Over the past 6 months my truck had developed a knock under the conditions noted in this TSB. Lately its been pretty constant. I should have taken the truck in sooner but finally had it done today. At the dealership I went on a drive with the tech to show him the noise, the TSB, and he agreed. After it was completed we drove around and the knock had gone. It sounded and felt smoother running as well. Glad I got it done

Ditto here, went to the dealer, performed the TSB, it fixed it and runs great. No losses in power.

In Cincinnati temps have been in upper 80's. Just yesterday I noticed the aforementioned pinging noise exactly at 1500 rpms with the AC on. I always use 87 gas too. I agree that if Toyota has a solution go with that bc we shouldn't have to run 93 gas in these trucks. Thanks to the knowledge in Tacomaworld the problem is hopefully getting fixed tomorrow by the dealership for FREE. I'll follow up to see if the TSB works.

My 2013 dclb 4x4 is pinging like a sonar under load. I tried switching from 87 to 91 octane but #1, no big difference, #2 most threads read that our trucks are rated for 87 and not to use 91 or 93. Will higher octane hurt the engine? It sucks because it only has 30,000 miles but if something needs being looked at I am glad it is under the bumper to bumper warranty though. Can they reflash the truck if you ask them too? Do I just go in their and say "can you do this tsb for my truck?"

Typically they have to verify the sound before doing the tsb. Take your truck in and say you want to take a tech for a ride to listen to the noise. hopefully you can hear it and have the tsb handy to show them you think that is the cause. If it is hit or miss on pinging try having a video ready.

Just a heads up. This wasn't the case with my truck. I brought the printed copy of the TSB, explained the issue, and told the service writer that there was currently premium grade fuel in the truck so it was unlikely to ping aggressively. I picked up the truck later that day, and the TSB was complete.

TSB completed free of charge at Toyota. I printed the TSB off and took it with with to the mechanic. Knocking sound gone. Running 87 gas and life is good.

Talking to Toyota on the phone now trying to resolve this for my 2011. No TSB yet (or probably ever) for this model. Truck sounds like crap and it cannot be good long term.

I changed the plugs at 45k on my 2011 Taco and pinging essentially went away, however it is cooling Down without the 90% humidity.

I know the plugs were recommended to be changed at 30k (Emmisions Warrenty) but I scoffed at the idea since my 2007 4Runner went 85K with factory plugs and ran just fine. Only reason I changed them in the runner is the on board computer showed a drop in gas mileage, by about 4 mpg.

Plugs I pulled from the Taco were worn far worse than the runner. Gap had increased to .between .045 & .050+ Very obvious worn electrode. Plugs looked like they had been in the car years and years. Same factory plugs, same engine but very different wear and results.

FYI my 2013 was pinging badly prior to TSB. Had TSB performed and while the truck is not pinging nearly as much as before the TSB on a 80+ degree day I am still hearing pinging under certain throttle loads on 87 octane. Disappointing. Also the dealer did not install an modification label under the hood. Anyone else have a similar experience?

Mine doesn't ping anymore and I've driven on several 90+ degree days. Dealer didn't install the sticker.

Same here. My dealer didn't question the TSB, they got the truck in and done in short order.

Well here I am sitting at the Toyota dealership trying to get the spark noise TSB done lol
Of course they said that it might be due to my intake among other things needing cleaning and that service is on sale for $189 lol
I think I will def decline that service when they return (I hate coming here)
Also said there will be a $65 diagnostic charge (waived if it ends up being warranty related) I wasn't really expecting to hear that. Anyone else been told this? The guy said only about 30% of tacos actually need the TSB done (to which I assume in my mind the other 70% get slapped with the $65 fee lol)
