Toyota has to be getting feedback, right?

The engine is not "new tech" LOL Its a proven design used in Lexus for years and simply retuned for the Tacoma. Atkinson cycle has been around for over 100 years.

Toyota’s D-4S port- and direct-injection system is new for the tacoma but was and is sold elsewhere. The Lexus IS350, and Lexus GS350 also feature D-4S. Maybe some believe there should be a "truck engine" in a truck..... whatever that is. I have no issues with the D-4S reliability. Lexus is the most reliable car made. Anything the Tacoma gets from Lexus is huge upgrade in confidence in my book.

The Tacoma will never get a diesel but one can find one soon in the Colorado or Canyon

As far as "simplicity" I am sure a rebuild of either engine would be expensive, I have not read of any major issues or failures of the D4-S in the Lexus forums and I looked hard for them.

What exactly is it that 1 single ft. lb. less will stop you from doing?

Problem with Jeeps is they start falling apart by the time you get to 80k-100k miles.

1 single ft lb is negligible yes, but we have not even seen a torque graph yet. The torque on the new Tacoma is still well behind that of the Nissan Frontier from 2006. Not saying we needed a V8 but man, it's been ten years and the powertrain improvement we got was "meh" at best.

 

My local dealer is getting 2016's in next week and I am going to test one. I imagine it won't be hard to beat the 3.4 liter I still drive.

 

When I do buy a '16, I'm not planning to keep it stock. I never do. Stock vehicles look boring and bland to me. Always have. I never want to pass myself on the street. If theres something I don't like about the '16 Taco, I'll modify it until I do like it. That's just me.

Toyota may be listening. Maybe not too. I guarantee the aftermarket manufacturing industry is though. Won't be long before someone like Rigid Industries comes out with a bad-ass grille. Someone like Pelfreybilt will come out with a bad-ass bumper. Long-travels and lifts will make these trucks more proportionate and add aggression. Mark my words… These trucks are going to be bad-ass! Some of us can already envision it. Some people are seriously lacking in the creativity department.

 

Not sure about you, but I tend to drive trucks somewhat harder than luxery cars that never leave pavement or haul a load. I'll judge the reliability of the re-tuned engine in the Tacoma, from the Tacoma. Like I said; only time will really tell, and I'll be happy to sit back and wait for several years.

 

Couldn't have said it better. This new gen Tacoma was designed for government regulaions, not to meet consumer demand. Lot's of R&D had to be wasted on meeting the government's new 2016 CAFE standards alone.

 

I honestly feel that more and more people are embracing it. I compiled most of the popular shots of the 3rd gen in my thread, actual 3rd gen owners now who have taken pics of them look much better than stock dealer pics.

The trend I've noticed is that when one person bashes it another tends to join in and then you get a group of trolls. I call this internet peer pressure. The funny thing is some of these "trolls" will flip flop and say "oh I actually like it, it looks good in this light" dude either you like it or you don't.

No doubt this is true.

It is what it is. While it may not look the sexy beast we all wanted to see, get used to it. Based on Toyota's history with the Tacoma, we are likely gonna be looking at it as it is for a long while. As Predator Strikeforce mentioned above, a lift, wheels and tires will make it instantly more appealing. Given the size of that grill there is a lot of space for creativity.

Nah. They will sell tons of these and that's all the feedback they will need. Sure, they will tweak things as all car companies do a year or two after a new model rolls out but don't expect gen 4 to be coming out in two years with 410 horse power and 450 torque with 32 MPGs at $32,000.

 

I really can't read much more after that. If you think an enthusiast forum is a large portion, think again. It's been said time and time again... while the majority of users on this website might mod their truck 9/10 Tacomas I see on the road are bone stock. That's where the large portion comes from.

Well, another thing is that's it's a new truck, regardless of continuation parts from 2nd gen. It's new looking, so of course it's going to be popular, it's a Tacoma...

 

Exactly. Look I have heard so many complaints about the Gen3 looks, performance, interior, wheels, etc...etc...

Ok that is fine, but how is it that these gen 3 are selling like hot cakes and people are paying over MSRP. Not to mention people are ordering these trucks before they are even made or hit the dealerships. Toyota must be doing something right with the GEN 3
