how much do you tip on average?

so, this is kind of a rant, but i was curious what others tip as well.

tonight, my wife and i ordered pizza for delivery. the delivery guy got our order here in 30 minutes (really good for a friday night) and he carried everything across the apartment complex, up the stairs, and into our building. i asked him how much he gets on average for tips. he said that hes been working today since 5pm and only 2 other people tipped him!! can you believe that? is that shocking to anyone else or is it just me? so, i gave him an extra $10 and thanked him for his hard work. he was soooo thankful. you could tell that was a big pat on the back for him.

if the server is doing a good job, usually, i tip about 25-30%, but there was this one time, however, that i went way beyond that...
my wife and i were eating at CoCo's one night and our server was working her ass off. i think she had too many tables and she was running all over the restaurant. she tried her best to make her rounds to all the tables and made sure that everyone was taken care of and you could tell that she was getting out of breath. she managed to get our food to us in a reasonable time and she kept our drinks full and she was still being nice. so, when the bill came, i put down $50 on the $25 bill. she worked her ass off and she deserved it. i figured that would make up for anyone who didnt tip her well.

IMO, if you can afford to eat out, then you can afford to tip (provided that the service was good).

I am usually a very generous tipper unless the person is just lazy on a slow night...

 

20-25% unless they really sucked, but even then 15%

 

15-20% They have to suck real bad to get less than 15%.

 

wow..you guys have some awesome service. Me and a buddy went to applebees one night, and our waitress was super slow and she sucked hardcore. we watched her sit down and eat and BS for like an hour then come up and ask if we wanted anything else..there was probably like a dozen people in there(late at night)..thats the only time I think we left nothing more then pocket change.

 

I have a saying or should I say a motto and it goes like this
DONT SHIT WHERE YOU EAT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

period end of story for all those cheap asses who dont tip at least 20_ 30 % go it a job at dennys and see if you like it , or go eat at micky ds

yea I agree with that, one time I saw my mom leave a penny for horrible service

 

I always tip based off of service, with me being a server that is what i expect. There will be days when i bust my ass, put up with some of the most interesting people, while giving 110% service, and will be expecting nothing less then 20% when i pick the bill up. Then other days i might not be on my game and i am not the least amount surprised when i see a crummy tip. Good service = good tip, bad service = bad tip, just tip accordingly to let your server know how they did. Dont be the person that tips the same % every time.

 

I would say it depends on how much they rub on me and if they smile while they do it.....

But if I am eating out I feel the same , REWARD THE HARD WORKING.I went to Dennys once and had to get my own fucking drink refilled and the person I was with drink once.The bill was like 14 dollars.I left 2 bucks and a note.I went back weeks later , same server.The service was much better.I only had to get my drink refilled once and my friends once.She got 3 bucks.I didn't go back for 8 months.

The best was an applebees , food took over 30 minutes.Realize we didn't even complain.Manager came up and apologized , BSed with us , gave us a free desert! It took 13 minutes.It was one of the warm brownies with ice cream.I thought it was ridiculous they thought that was acceptable.I have never gone back.

I have had several that stood out so much I tipped 50% plus and called they head manager the next day to rave about them.I will do that in retail too if someone stands out as doing a great job.I did it with the guy that helped me pick out my wheels 2 months ago.I also did it with a clerk at Kohls that was really on the ball.

 

Usually 15%. Depending on sevice it could go up or down. When I was in Iceland tipping was frowned upon. It was looked at like you felt sorry for the server, so you gave him/her extra money.

No one tips me and I'm serving everyday.

 

x2 if im by myself.. even at applebees or something like that.. i will do $5 for a $10-15 meal.. if theres more people.. obviously i raise the tip.. if the server is doing a crappy job and i know they are not busy... not as good.

 

The normal tip would be 15-20% depending on the type of service. There are places that the waiter/waitress doesn't do anything but take your order and deliver your food.

If the waitress is 'ontop' of things - they'll get a lot more. If I'm drinking and they keep filling my glass...they'll get even more.

Funny...but the December/January issue of Readers Digest magazine has an article in there about the things that waiters/waitresses won't tell you - pretty interesting.

 

I would say I am a pretty generous tipper as well...I am not afraid to reward good service. Usually around 20%

 

I usually will tip anywhere from 20% to 30% on average. I know how much it can suck to be in a service industry and feel that giving a nice tip for genuinely good service is well deserved. In the event that the waiter/waitress or whatever service that usually warrants a tip, does not care about their work or their quality of service that is provided, I usually don't care much about the tip. I have also been known to leave a nickle on the table when it is really bad, just to let them know that I didn't forget their tip.

 

i usually round my price up to the nearest dollar and from there add five dollars to it... now where i eat my bill usually only comes out to 13.00 so thats almost 50%

 

What do you guys think about Tip Jars? Like the the ones @ drive thru windows or even Starbucks? I have tipped @ Starbucks on occasion, but really dont like those tip jars. Restaurants usually 15-25%

 

I try to tip between 20-25%...Unless of course my drink is always empty and the the person waiting on me is a douche!!!

 

I always double the tax and leave that. Usually round up if good. Round down if bad.
