This was my GTO loaded up on Uhaul car carrier towed with 6.2L Sierra Denali all wheel drive... Like I said it was a little perilous merging into LA traffic on the I-10. I think trailer was 2000-2500lbs and GTO weight is almost 2 tons. Definitely would not attempt in a Tacoma. Plenty of power, it's the stopping and maneuvering that can get nasty

Did that have heavy duty cooling? If not, it's rated at 6700 as well

My Denali curb weight was close to 3 tons... can't remember towing cap but thought it was closer to 8k lbs or 9k lbs

Nope. C series was 8600 lbs, K series was 8400 lbs, both with GCVW of 14,000. Not to mention a curb weight of over 5100 lbs.
Once again, mid size vs full size.

    Edit. Guessing 2008 Denali

Those numbers are without the coolers? Then what is the rating with coolers?

What? Like aftermarket. Denali had no option for coolers or not. They were loaded and you basically chose between 2wd or 4wd, all of which came with 3.42 gears. At least that generation (circa 2008).

Mine pictured there is a 2011, and it is AWD not 4x4 but not sure about gearing. You're a GM tech right?

I am, not sure about the guy you quoted. I was going by quick google search on my phone for towing capacity. Owners manual wouldnt load on it.

Ahh that's newer than I thought it was. That year had an HD package. Tow caps for the AWD were 6400 and 9400.
And no...I just remember a lot of useless shit.

The fuel economy on my Denali 9.3 avg around town ...lucky to get 16 on hwy. My goat has the original 400 (~6.6L) motor with quadrajet carb and gets closer to 13mpg around town... with a heavy foot....

Op what's the distance you will be towing? If it's relatively close out shouldn't be too much an issue. But on long stretches your better with the full-size like others had mentioned. I have a 2012 tacoma and just bought a new Silverado this June. The silvy just handles towing much better then my tacoma does.

9.3 isnt bad. the g8 averages 6-6.5 with the 3600 stall

350-400 miles would be the farthest. I would love to buy a silverado/sierra, but I'm not buying used and I really don't want to spend more than 35k

I had at least 4500 on the back of a DCSB 15 this weekend. Towed great and I had the car loaded correct so it didnt even feel like the trailer was there. Towed just as good as my fathers old 1500 GM with 4.8.
Wondering how the 3.5 will compare to the 4.0. Seemed to have plenty of pull up hill starting off, highway it held higher rpm till the top. Thats whats holding me between a 15 or 16, is the 3.5 going to handle towing decently.

That's what happens when I mistaken...."only be used as (daily driver during the winter)" for "only be used as a daily driver (during the winter)"

Reading comprehension is the first to go......sorry

Check out Fastlane Truck Tacoma Ike Gauntlet run towing test review on utube. They test a 4.0 pulling 5000 and later check the Colorado pulling 5000. The Colorado does it Ok...but at as much as 1000 rpm higher. The Taco stays at 4000 when at times the Colorado spins at 6000. I thing the 3.5 would have similar results.
