Two reasons to change Designs. One is your Sales are way down and two, your Competition has arrived with a better product. Toyota continues to outsell Competition two to one even with older Design. The new GM Products are generating Sales but not like Tacoma. Why? They are unproven for Reliability.
If Ford brings back the Ranger it may present Toyota with more challenge, however, Tacoma Reliability is almost Legendary. The new 2016 Tacoma does not fill everyone's dream but that is not unusual. What I like may be terrible for your tastes and vice-versa. Overall they did a good job on this Truck because they are already a winner. I hope to get mine this week. If the new Ranger was here I would probably have one of those instead. Only time will tell how the new Tacoma performs. I believe it will be fine, large nose and all. But they could turn on the Build Site?

I think it depends on the market buying the Taco.

It's clear Toyota doesn't care to be in the full-sized market. The Tundra sucks compared to all other full-sized trucks.
Toyota has the majority of the mid-sized market with the Taco. It is a whole different group of buyers with a whole different group of users. Toyota owners typically go for a more off-road capable vehicle that will last. I feel like people buying mid-sized domestic trucks just want a smaller work truck with interior features of a full-sized.
So I think, different markets. Toyota is going to get the more off-road part of the mid-sized market while the twins and Frontier will get the other portion.

Look at how many first gen owners are nay sayers to the second gen LOL.
I think the new Taco may do well, I do however think that it will not live up to it's hype or expectations.

You know who is going to piss and moan the most about the Tacoma?

It's avid supporters and owners. People who don't care, don't care to get upset.

The Tundra is a great truck. It's just old like the Tacoma. Very reliable 5.7 liter, but it just gets shitty MPG. Hopefully the upcoming Tundra re-do is more than just a botox job like the Tacoma was.

The Tundra lacks in interior and features as well though. Also in engine options and configurations... it really doesn't compare to the customizability of the domestics. It's basically like "oh here's a truck with x,y,z take it or leave it".

Considering that pedestrian bar protuberance, add collagen lip injection to the botox.

Or will look elsewhere, guessing many will go fullsize or GM midsize diesel....

I am not seeing $6000 worth of improvements.

Maybe if it had a diesel...funny how Toyota said they wouldn't do the diesel because people wouldn't pay for it...and yet they are paying for it...and not getting a diesel. ha ha...Lemmings

The Tundra is an "ok" truck...not a great truck...why they can't sell them in them in mass numbers like the other fullsizes. Yeah it is reliable...so are the F150 and Silverado. Sure Toyota fan boys will dog on those two saying they are junk...if they were, they wouldn't sell in the numbers that they do. My father-in-law ran his last Chevy up to 250K miles with little issues, said he only traded it in because he is retiring next year and wanted something with less miles.

My uncle has over 300K on his Silverado.
You can make a truck last as long as you need it too. Funny how a lot of people talk reliability and knock many of the domestic auto makers, but how many people really do keep their trucks THAT long? Most people seem to trade in well before the life expectancy of the truck.

You can make anything last if you try...even a Dodge...err...well you have to try REAL hard with a Dodge... :D

Think the problem is...majority of people don't take care of their vehicles...then get on the internet to complain...then the internet blows things waaaay out of proportion...as the internet does.

As for the new Tacoma...sure it will sell, but they may have a harder time this go around. Many feel disenchanted with this new update, the increased prices probably won't help either....and are looking elsewhere. I am seeing an awful lot of the new GM's on the road as of late.

SwollenGoat the $6000 in improvements quote came from a guy who also said he bought a 2015 to "hedge" against what came out in 2016. When the 2016 came out he bought that.

I would not take anything he says as coming from truth or intelligence.

More money than brains I guess.

Some people like to have things that are the latest and the greatest (hell, people are buying these things blind without even test driving them!...and for fuck's sake the website is STILL not updated WTF Toyota!?)...not that there is anything wrong with that, probably not the best financial decision tho'.

For the cost of the new Tacoma's I am seeing better buys elsewhere other than Toyota. I gotta say, the F150 is looking like the best bang for the buck right now.

A lot of people seem to forget that the Tacoma fills a particular use case - a very off-road capable vehicle that can tow/haul. The "buy a full-size" or "the colorado has diesel" or "Jeep is off-road king" are not viable alternatives. Jeep...cant tow a turd downhill. Colorado...lol off-road? Full-size (e.g. F150)....I guess if "off-road" is an improved dirt road. Good luck getting an F150 or the like down a true 4x4 trail.

^ this. I'm not sure what goes in in other parts of the world but the photos we see on TW of guys tackling extreme trails is the minority. I would say 5 - 10 percent of truck buyers.

Again in my part of the world you are some mods on tacomas but not a lot. Most are used as street machines and dirt road drivers.

Even Toyota said only 40% of owners use their trucks of road but then failed to define what offroad means to them ( E.g. extreme trail vs gravel road)

I'm in the middle of boreal forest oil patch land where there are a lot of poor and unimproved roads to access lease sites. Most trucks I see the crews using are the domestics - they seem to do fine.
