I like Mike Tirico. I like John Gruden as a coach. I have always hated him as a color commentator. He would find something good out of a player taking a shit on the field. I like Trent Dilfer as an analyst but as a color last night he was too over the top. Chris Berman is Chris Berman.

Guess I had a false memory of him being a bruiser. I went back and looked at tape, and you're right. Mostly used his speed to get open, and get the YAC. Saw very few broken tackles.

I'm a big believer in pointing at small things that create a change. 1 act that makes a difference no matter how big or small. A first sip of alcohol, a first joint. Small things have huge impacts in our lives. Davis suffered a concussion from that hit, we are just now beginning to see what concussions, especially severe or repeat concussions, cause.

I think of it like this. That hit came at a time when the 49ers were still the dominant team in the division, December of 2012. The Seahawks had closed the gap on the 49ers that year. After that game, the Niners lost the SB to the Ravens, a game they should have won. The next year the Seahawks establish themselves as the class of the division and then beat the 49ers in the NFC championship game, win the SB and make it back to the SB the next year.

That game, and that point in that game, signify a change. A precise moment in time when the pendulum swung back away from the 49ers and towards the Seahawks.

Davis hasn't been the same since then and neither have the 49ers or Seahawks.

That's because of the team. When you think of 49ers you think of hard hitting and tough. Davis was never that. I would actually argue he's soft, always has been. Mentally especially but physically too.

I think you're reading into it too much.

Vernon Davis' play fell off because of scheme and QB. VD was especially good with Alex Smith, because as we continue to see in KC, Alex Smith is only successful when throwing to TEs.

And when I say scheme, last year Harbaugh gambled with Kap and tried to give him the reigns. That meant trying to have him pass downfield and to the WRs - not necessarily the TEs. Not to mention the shotty pass pro from the OLine (those guys were maulers and good for run blocking) and VD had to stay in and block a lot. That is why his productivity SUCKED last year.

Another thing that hurt him last year was his holdout. He didn't go to any OTAs and didn't get any reps. AND he was most worried about his brand and all of his non-football investments (art studio, jamba juice, etc).

Now that there's a new offense, there was a huge push in the off season to give VD more targets this year. Last night proved that as VD had the most targets on offense.

I'm not saying he's going to be back to where he used to be, but that is why I believe he fell off.

We also have a second TE who is just as good as VD is, now. McDonald.

Actually, I think Celek has passed, or is going to pass McDonald on the depth chart

That might be correct now, since McDonald is becoming more of a FB than a TE. But having a FB with TE hands is never a bad thing.

While I appreciate your well thought out, and well presented theory, you might as well throw in some astrology references, too. There are so many variables in sport, hell, in life, that to be confident in your methodology is needles in haystacks percentages. It reminds me of a cult movie I once watched many years ago where one of the characters is walking along a trail, stops suddenly, and announces to his friends, "It was right here, on this spot, that I lost all interest in life". To be able to point to one moment in time as the answer for all that follows is fantasy.

Aside from that, I'm excited for Week 2.

He's not nearly as good with the Eagles as he was in Dan Quinn's system. Or maybe it was a product of Julio just burning him

I think being opposite Sherman and having Kam and Earl behind you allow you to play much more aggressively, you're not so worried about getting beat deep. Julio is damn good though..
