I have been looking over all of the options & spec sheets and the various pictures of all the different trims, and I'm starting to think I would be happiest with a Tacoma SR DCSB with the V6, convenience package, and the black alloy wheels.

I'm not someone who typically goes for a base model of any vehicle, as I tend to like features and new technology. But for the price difference, the extra features on the higher trims just do not seem worth it. I think I could better spend that money on accessories and aftermarket stuff.

I compared the features between the SR & TRD Off Road (the 2 models I would consider), and here are the differences:

    1) Price: TRD Off Road costs $4900 extra

    2) Wheels: I actually prefer the black alloy wheels on the SR

    3) Over fenders: You get these on the TRD, which is nice. I'm sure they can be added to the SR.

    4) Rear bumper: body colored on the SR, chrome on the TRD unless you add the premium & tech package (another $2300), then it would also be body colored. I prefer body colored.

    5) Front grill: all black on the SR, chrome/grey on the TRD Off Road. I prefer the all black grill.

    6) Daytime running lights: You get them on both, but the TRD has LED running lights. I do like the look, but it no longer stands out like it did 5 years ago as almost every new car has them now.

    7) Fog lights: You get them on the TRD, not on the SR. I guess it's a nice feature to have, but I have them on my current vehicle, and I never even bother to turn them on unless I am in actual fog, which isn't often. So not really a necessity. I suppose they look nice.

    8) Bed mounted power outlet: A nice feature, but something I would rarely use as I don't go camping. Only use I can think of is when cleaning the car, I would plug the vacuum in instead of having to run an extension cord from the garage.

    9) Privacy glass: I can add tint aftermarket for a very low price. I probably won't even bother.

    10) Color multi-information display: standard on the TRD, not on the SR. For my comments on this, see #11 below.

    11) Navigation: The TRD comes standard with the better head unit with navigation. This also works in conjunction with the color multi information display as you can see the radio station/song information on that display.

As an iPhone user, I promised myself that my next vehicle would have Apple Carplay as I would much rather use the built in maps program on my phone than the crappy one that comes in the car. Some of the new trucks offer this feature. But the Tacoma does not. So I would most likely be changing out the head unit for an aftermarket one. I would probably wait until wireless carplay is available on an aftermarket head unit, which is coming this year. If I change out the head unit, I would rather not have the color multi information display, as some of the features would be left non-functional. So while the better system does offer some features like knowing your current gas mileage and seeing your tire pressures for each tire, I think having Apple Carplay is more important to me.

Perhaps it's OCD, but I hate having different screens in the same car that don't play well together, and don't match in the same font/color, etc.

    12) Auto Climate control: A nice feature to have, but not needed.

    13) Qi wireless charging: doesn't work with iphone without an adapter, so not of great use to me. I can charge my phone in the USB socket.

    14) Smart Key with push button start: This is actually a great feature that I would love to have on a new vehicle, but now I'm reading that it doesn't work with the tailgate, so then I would have to carry a regular key with me anyway. So then of what use is this? I'd rather just carry a regular key with me and start the car with that key. Carrying both the regular key and the smart key fob is a pain.

    15) Leather steering wheel: a nice thing to have, but I can always get an aftermarket leather steering wheel cover for $50 if I decide it's so important (I doubt I would bother)

    16) Auto dimming rear view mirror: again a nice feature, but not necessary.

    17) Crawl Control: I don't think I will ever do serious enough off roading for this to matter. It looks cool, but is one of those things that will be nice to know I have, and I will probably never use. Same goes for the rear locker.

And that is all. For $5k extra, it hardly seems worth it for these features, most of which I would not even use often, if ever.

So I'm thinking I will probably just save the extra money, get the SR, add some nice AT tires to it (cost of around $600), a nice aftermarket head unit with carplay (cost of around $600-800), and then I'm still $3500 ahead.

I'm thinking white with the black wheels and the black predator steps will look really nice.

Seems logical enough. I think the SR is a good value.

I agree..... Last year I ordered a 2015 Access Cab with no options. At first Toyota would not build it and wanted me to add some options. It finally got built the way I wanted it.

Anyway, if I was going to order a new 2016, it would be the SR with the alloy wheels and convenience package. Unfortunately, the SR doesn't come in Inferno, otherwise I would consider it. I hate to say it, but I am really beginning to like the looks of the 2016.

I just saw the above photo on cars.com. It's a SR, but with the utility package delete. Not crazy about the black bumpers treatment.

I'm assuming this is the " BZ - SR Utility Package - $ -1441 | $ -1715". It removes the rear seats, seat belts, cup holders and has black plastic mirrors, door handles, and bumpers on the base SR.

I think the price difference makes it a good value, but I would love the to have the SR V6 with a 6spd.

If I wasn't getting the TRD ORDC 4X4, I'd be getting a black SR5 AC 4x4 with the V6.. I'd have no problem with that. But for me personally, you get a good bit of extras for the TRD Off-road package.. Just my opinion..

Nice to know that Toyota will do the utility package delete. Do they offer a stereo delete?

On the push button start. How much more can it cost to the button instead of the key?

Also on the FOB for cars with the push button. Inside the FOB is a small car key. So you can get in the car just in case the battery dies. My Lexus had one.

The 5spd for the 4cyl supposedly got new gearing. Did it also get the triple syncro's like the 6spd?

1st gear seems to have gotten a new triple syncro. The rear end also went from 4.10 to 3.91.

I didn't hear the seats ? On the previous gen2, you needed the SR5 to get the manual lumbar adjustment. It was worth it to me as any model SR5 or higher gets it. That is just an observation....maybe all have the lumbar adjustment. From a guy with a bod back. ;-)

According to the spec sheet that has been posted, lumbar support is standard even on the base SR.

This really makes a lot of sense. I am giving the SR Double Cab V6 4x4 model a lot of consideration. If I can get a dealer to play ball around invoice. I can get a SR Doubt Cab V6 4x4 Auto for around $26,786. Add the SR Convenience package and get the cruise control and keyless entry added for $428.00. Add those SR Black alloy rims for $387.00. Add the towing package for $579.00 and another $579.00 for the Tonneau Cover. That is only $28,759. Add the SET destination charge and I am at 29,649 before taxes. I will simply add the intermittent wiper on my own. Pretty sweet deal imo.
