I've been driving mine since Saturday! Bought it as Toyota Escondido - loving my new truck - got Inferno TRD Sport, I've put 150 miles on it now in 3 days commuting to work. My 2 boys (3 & 4) love having a truck again (I sold my 2012 about 10 months ago waiting for this truck to arrive) - my other car is a bmw i3... two completely different animals.

Push button start is kind of a gimmick. Both are essentially two electronic parts making contact to start your motor. Turning my wrist 90 degrees isn't that much of an effort. I wouldn't be mad if my Tacoma had one but I wouldn't seek one out.

The push button is just the means to an end. The proximity locks are the real "feature". Push button just comes along with it because it would be silly to have the convenience of not needing your keys to lock and unlock just to have to fish them out to start the truck and put them away when finished driving.

Push-button starts are a convenience for women with giant purses who can't be bothered to dig for the key. It doesn't take much effort to fish a key out of my pocket.
On the other hand, it's a HUGE inconvenience when a 10-year-old push button stops working when it's -20 outside. A key cylinder works reliably in all weather for 200K+ miles, regardless of the temp. Can't say the same for an ignition button in the cold.
If you doubt me, I used to work as a service writer at a garage. When 5 year old key buttons start failing in cold weather...not a great sign.
That's why I think they're gimmicky. Most places don't get -20 weather regularly, so it's not a big deal for most folks. But in Maine, -20 is a regular occurrence between December and March. So, I tend to balk at reliability sacrificed in the name of technological convenience (laziness). That's all.

 

How do you do a push start with a keyless system?

 

Keys and key cylinders never wear out.

 

I don't think you can, thanks to automotive computers.

 

A push button and a key are both switches.

One you push. One you twist.

 

Agreed, there is still an electrical switch attached to the back of the lock cylinder the key goes in.

To push start a smart key system, push the button twice with your foot off the clutch pedal, push the vehicle, then pop the clutch. It's the same as normal, you just need to push the button to get it to "ON" instead of turning the key to that position. The Tacoma 6MT does not have smart key though.

Of all the problems I see on vehicles at work, smart keys are almost never one of them, and Toyota has been using them for over 10 years now. It's not a new technology.
