Has anyone put the Canyon up against the Tacoma?

As I wait for the Tacoma I will be looking at the GMC Canyon. Not a huge GM fan but that truck looks very nice and has a lot of options. I wonder if anyone has given the Canyon a look. No interest in the Colorado. I will be checking one out tomorrow as I have GM supplier Pricing and a dealer who will honor it. But I won't make a move until I see the Tacoma. If mine comes in soon I am sure the Tacoma will be better on many metrics...

I have six weeks to look see. I am getting a great price on my Tacoma and I love my dealer, but I want to hedge against a dealer screw up or change of deal when my truck arrives.

I have looked at the Canyon. It's more of a luxury truck and less of an off road truck like the Tacoma is. I'm not talking about capability necessarily, but style. The interior of the Canyon is really nice. Instead of the trim being silver painted plastic, it's real brushed aluminum. It's just a more classy looking truck both inside and out. I prefer the more sporty "mean" off road look of the Tacoma myself. But if I was one who was considering a Tacoma Limited, I would certainly take a look at the Canyon SLT.

Troll or not, it makes sense to look around instead of just blindly follow the other fanboys. I am a huge Toyota fanboy so it will be difficult to convince me to buy anything else, but I am still going to look at other options just to keep up with what is offered.
I feel the same as OP about not liking the Colorado, but I think the Canyon looks good. I have seen the inside and it looks good also. If I can get it for free I will drive it. If I have to pay for it the Tacoma will still be my first choice based on my experience (been driving Toyotas for more than 20 years)

Yup. First of all this guy said in another thread he bought a 2015 Tacoma as a hedge against the 2016 Tacoma and now he is considering a GM product.

Either he us trolling or financially inept.

I get employee price on GM, the Tacoma was still cheaper. That and I hate the 3.6 and junk 6 speed they are using in them

    I wouldn't say that.. his thread history shows he's owned a 2008, 2014, 2015, and is ordering a 2016..

I'd say he's confused, maybe.. but either way, some threads are made less for purpose and more for "I feel like being controversial," and only the OP knows what his real intentions were (they may be different than what he says they were..), every Colorado thread is like every 3rd gen thread, a trainwreck.

Double down on the trainwreck and you're sure to be king for a day.

The Canyon definitely looks way better than the Colorado. I love the Canyon's interior, especially the steering wheel. Unfortunately, it has the visibility and handling of a full-size truck. It felt like I was driving my buddy's Ram 1500 quad cab long box. Couldn't see worth a damn out the back and it accelerated like a turd and steered like a dead mule. Nothing about it was functionally impressive. It was all aesthetics. I went and drove a '15 TRD Sport right after that, and it was a night and day difference. I felt much more confident behind the wheel of the Tacoma, and the steering reacted exactly how I would expect.

We have a Colorado on our lot as a loan vehicle and I put it with the Frontier. Most uncomfortable ride ever.

I'll start by saying I've owned Acuras for the last 10+ yrs. The -best- AWD systems and great tech, but questionable aesthetics. I state this to convey I'm not a "fanboy" of any truck.

As of one week ago I had a 2016 Canyon Nightfall edition on order. MSRP was around 40k. After trade-in I was at 18k.

Come tomorrow (barring the dealer getting squirrelly) I'll have a TRD Sport DCSB on order for 38.5k with the same trade difference.

I have only sat an access cab SR5, but my comparison is below.

    - The Canyon is better looking - particularly the Nightfall.
    - The Canyon has a much better bed. Longer and deeper.
    - The Canyon crew cab has much more rear legroom than the Tacoma DC. To me this is the Tacoma's greatest failing. The trucks are almost identical in length, but the Tacoma front end is bloated.
    - The Canyon has auto 4WD plus the usual Hi and Lo.
    - The Tacoma will be much better offroad, but I doubt I'll ever need that capability.
    - The Tacoma has homelink. Really GMC?

So why am I buying a Toyota? Perceived reliability. I pray I'm right on this first year model.

I was on coloradofans for many hours over the last few weeks, and their first year model seems to be a disaster for many. Maybe they worked them out for the 16s. Guess I'll never know.

You can tell by the role outs. Colorado by the beach, Tacoma off road. Bikinis vs backwoods.

Could not agree more. Just because I prefer the Tacama, I would be remiss not at least looking or researching the competition.

I knew some would play the "troll card" merely by mentioning "the other woman" Blah blah but I really want to hear from those who DID look at the competition. Rather than those whose minds are closed and quick to yell troll whan anything but a Tacoma is brought up in conversation.

Thank you to those who answered my inquiry in a mature manner.

    Another victim, I see.

Please link to a similar thread on the Canyon forum, where you ask their impressions when comparing the Canyon to the new Tacoma.

Not confused......I have a 16 on order and a lot of time waiting...... decided while I wait, to look at the twins...Hate the Colorado...GMC looks a lot better.

I simply wondered if anyone on this board has had any experience with the Canyon. A few have...Nothing trolling about that. I bought Tacomas but have an open mind. I owned two Rangers as well.

I joined the Canyon forum to seek information there as well....They don't trash people who mention the Tacoma.

I don't understand getting emotionally involved with the mention of the competition as if it's a personal threat

That's fine.. I didn't actually say you were trolling. I said it's a bit of a troll post, then covered your history of Tacoma ownership to suggest you aren't actually trolling, because every GMC comparison thread on TW is worse than all the possible third gen threads you've seen.

I was just asking.. FWIW, I haven't touched a GM since 2006. I don't even include them in any possible future vehicle purchases because of my own reasons, but the GM twins have about the same split down the aisle that the 2016 has, it's either revered or it's hated.

Hopefully you find a truck that fits you, regardless of the brand.

The auto 4 wd is a huge advantage in snow country. It's much better on paved snow covered roads where you can't travel at very high speeds in truck 4 wd, especially on roads with snow followed by bare areas.

There was a whole discussion over there.

Same crap though... Some people can have a real discussion, while others bad mouth the other vehicle. "How can you get a Tacoma, it's 2015 and it has drum brakes?" "It's not a real truck if it doesn't have a full steel frame" "The seat doesn't even adjust? I feel like I'm sitting on the floor of the truck" etc....
