I went to test drive a 2016 taco the other day and I decided to test out a 4runner also. Im getting a 4runner. Hands down a better vehicle at least based off the first impression. I wanted a truck vut you know what? The few times I'll need to haul stuff that wont fit in the runner or is too dirty, etc. I'll just go rent a uhaul trailer.

I want a trail premium and find someone to swap hoods because I dont want the scoop.

Um..no.. The Pro is actually a Trail with extras.. They both come with a lot of the same features, but Pro has some nicer touches.. Piggyback reservoir Bilsteins for one.. Both Trail and Pro have rear locker also.. Limited Premium is the only one that comes at higher cost than the Pro with Trail Premium just under it.

You can't go wrong with either, and the '16 Tacoma looks outstanding..............but I am loving my 4Runner.

I was wondering about this myself, mainly because of the lack of security when parking the truck with stuff in the bed.

It may be dumb, but one of the reasons I'm sticking with the Tacoma is I like the idea of the latest/greatest tech, especially on the inside, even with stupid stuff like phone integration.

The Pro just is more expensive with other shocks and stuff....

I just looked at a comparison of the premium, trail, trail premium, and the Pro.. I don't want a sunroof... guess trail it is..

The 4Runner is shorter and has a tighter turning circle. Depending upon where you live, that might or might not be important to you.

The rear doors on the 4Runner have the wheel well cut out. The Tacoma DC does not. That bugs me.
But I'd own a 4Runner in a heartbeat if I could justify having both. I can not live without a pickup. I've tried and failed at that exercise.

It is. As I typed that I was assuming that all the V8s were 4x4s, forgot that all the 4x4 V8s are full-time 4x4.

Yep, Titanium Metallic 4x4 V8 w/ moonroof and dual power seats (no 3rd row.) Rear FJ coils w/ 2.5" Daystar spacers on top and OME yellow spacer on driver's side w/ 1 year old Sway-a-Way adjustable front coilovers up front. About 7,000 miles on 285/75r16 BFG AT KO2s w/ new matte gunmetal Level 8 MK6s installed in April.

I think my point was mostly that the carmax one sounds like a LOT of money, but my offer stands

    Ok, enough thread jacking

I love the V8 in my 4Runner. But when gas was $4/gallon, I certainly didn't love the fuel economy. My commute sucks -- about 15 miles and it takes me about an hour each way. You can do the math about my average speed while commuting. I get about 15 mpg and drive 15k miles per year. So when gas was $4/gallon, that was about $4,000 per year just in gas.

I drove the 5th gen 4Runner with the V6 and just didn't care for the drivetrain that much. Yes, it is just about as fast 0-60 as my 4Runner. But what I like about the V8 is that moderate acceleration is just so effortless -- low revs, lots of push, no drama. The truck just goes, without disturbing my wife in the passenger seat. The 5th gen will accelerate just as fast, but you have to dip deeper into the pedal, it downshifts, revs higher, more noise and drama, and my wife would notice.

While I would like to replace my '03 4Runner, I'm just not a fan of the drivetrain on the 5th gen. Perhaps Toyota will bring out a 6th gen in 2017 with a better drivetrain. I'm betting it will get the same 3.5l and 6-speed as the 2016 Taco. I haven't drive the new Taco, so I can't comment on that drivetrain, other than it does seem to have improved the fuel economy modestly over the previous generation, which is a good thing.

I do like my 4Runner, but it has had issues. Brake calipers freeze on a regular basis. I've replaced the front calipers at least 3 times and the rears at least twice. I believe that the 5th gen is less likely to have frozen calipers. My frame rusted to oblivion -- Toyota paid for most of the replacement, but I still had to pay $2,000. The V8 is pretty bulletproof, but you do have to have the timing belt replaced periodically, and that isn't cheap.

My steering was getting stiff suddenly, so I took it to the dealer on Monday. The intermediate shaft u-joint was rusted (which I suspected). They said that the power steering lines were also rusted (replacement cost $1000) and the right front CV boot was torn. I also had them fix the driver side running board -- the supports had rusted out. Total cost: $2500. Ouch.

Not to thread jack, but I would need to register on the 4runner site to ask a simple question. Yes servco has a monopoly here in Hawaii. Got a price of just under $40 OTD for a '16 trail with KDSS.

    Thoughts..
