Has anyone put the Canyon up against the Tacoma?

Jesus will you people stop your bickering and pull your panties from your bung hole. So he hasn't committed to the Tacoma fully. A lot of us haven't mainly because we are not yet comfortable with the amount of ass raping that will happen by the majority of the dealers.

I Posted the same question in the Canyon forums......Why did they pass on the Tacoma I woul imagine many of them were Tacoma owners since for awhile Tacoma was the only real compact truck getting most of the sales.

Most of these comments are actually spot on (the ones not talking shit of course). The canyon is a good looking truck but the thing that sets the Tacoma so high is the overall lifespan of them. My dad has a Canyon (still does) but after around 70-80k miles the truck really lost all the "smooth" handling it barely had brand new. Now at 150k the truck has started failing in electrical, steering, and other areas. Thats what made me buy the Tacoma. Not to mention our family owns 5 vehicles and 4 of them are Toyota. I bought a vehicle that I knew was gonna last for a very long time cuz I dont like to swap out vehicles every three years.

I committed $500 to the Tacoma but I have six weeks to wait and thought I would take a look at the competition, The Twins forum is very active and I wondered out loud there why they would not buy the QDR of the Tacoma. I think many of them point to the frame issue, but Toyota stepped up whenever they had an issue.....GM has a track record NOT admitting issues and not fixing anything but "safety" issues while Toyota fixed reliability issues with recalls

I am not considering the Canyon seriously, but I do have an interest and would not except it if it's the better truck for me. I think the Canyon is a better street truck for the money but I have issues with GM....and still I think people should look at the competition as well even while preferring the Tacoma, because Canyon sales are taking Tacoma sales and I believe responsible for the 2016 Tacoma update.

    Slightly different perspective here............

Last year at this time I was in a '98 Sonoma. Nicely equipped for its day, and it had served me well since '05. Bought at 75k and had 135k. 4 cyl auto, regular cab. But it was failing cosmetically after 17 years of Fl sun and little care.

I decided I wanted an access cab of some type to keep more gear secured, would like a rear slider window, would like better MPG if possible. Didn't need/want a bunch of fancy stuff or 4wd. Just a basic truck. Didn't care about new, just kinda new and well cared for. It's a truck. It's for fishing and hauling light loads, and may wander a couple hundred miles from home occasionally.

I got interested in the GM twins reading about them, and decided to hold off till I could see on in person. I mean '57 Chevy's look nice in photos and drawings, but in person they are land arcs, so 'live' was for me. In the meantime I shopped all the marquees of possible interest, Tacoma, Nissans, GMC and Rangers.

I like the looks of the Gen1 Tacomas the best, but the prices for a nice one were unreasonable to me. The old Nissan trucks (pre Frontier) were like Toyotas of the era. Bullet proof, basic, and a bit raw. I had a nice '96 for a while. But pretty rare to find unbeaten with reasonable miles.

No GMC product I looked at was any better than the Sonoma I already had. Rangers had ended production. To get one in the last couple years made, and a 'super cab', you had to get the 4.0, which I did not want. You could get an extended cab (no rear door to open) but I really wanted that access.

Now. I go out one morning and find myself parking next to a new Canyon with my Sonoma. The thing is huge. Like almost Silverado huge. Immediately off my list. Sorry, if I'm buying something that big, I'm buying a real truck. Mid-size. What a joke.

Started looking at Gen2 Tacomas. Also bigger than I liked, but not GM big. In a few weeks I found my '13 base w/convenience package. Got what I wanted plus a touch more, only 8.5k on a 2 year old truck of choice, in the color I wanted. Paid a bit too much, but not terribly. More importantly, my goal is either 10 years of use (and to a grandson), or 20 years of use and call it a day for truck ownership. This should easily do either.

To me, the 3rd Gen is also too big. Both in physical size and cost.

My hope is that by my 10 year window potential shopping window there will be a return to smaller truck options, as opposed to the continual supersizing of everything.

One can never have too many light bars.
Actually with the way these things hold their value he could have made a profit if he played his cards right.

I test drove a canyon fully loaded 40k. The outside was nice, the inside was "nice" but uninspiring. The ride was quiet, but I found it drove like a concrete jungle dominator when I need something more sporty and exciting when I am making an investment of this magnitude. I live a very active lifestyle, and you can say it's branding at work, but I find additional intrinsic value in Toyota due to the styling of the Tacoma and the opportunities to recreate that the Tacoma image inspires.

That intrinsic value is also supported by my understanding that domestic cars are totally unreliable. That statement doesn't mean that all of them are terrible, or all of them have issues, but merely points out the fact that I can't go into a purchase of the Canyon or any American product without a sense of uneasiness. If I can't purchase a product without inducing a sense of worry regarding longevity it fails my reliability test. Every person I know who has had a domestic vehicle has had at least one single catastrophic or major lifestyle failure with their vehicle. Toyota and Honda pass that test. I value not having a reason to worry about something breaking down (doesn't mean I won't get a lemon or that the Tacoma won't end up being a headache, just that I can go into the purchase with nothing but positive experiences across several generations of family members and dozens of vehicles purchased), and to me that is an effective price reduction.

The Canyon and Colorado are gorgeous vehicles but I live my life expecting excellence out of my professional and recreational endeavors, I believe Toyota embodies that same sentiment. image.jpg

I would wait for the diesel.

I test drove the Colorado, thought it drove very nice...that electric steering is a pleasure. Engine felt peppy enough for me.

Seeing more and more on the road lately...I think the Colorado is the better looking of the two (more subdued), but both aren't bad.

Size wise, it feels like a 1st gen Tundra....some say is the goldilocks size of trucks.

Im in the same boat mostly because the dealers so far have been less than useless and completely unresponsive. One minute they are hot to pre-order get my CC and sign a deal and then we find out what I want will take actual work to get (three mouse clicks). Then they disapear.

I profited on the 08...The 14 was a mistake buying used, I took it back the next day and paid $4500 more for a new 15. I sold the 15 for $27900 a couple weeks ago and placed an order for the same truck in a 16.

I read a few articles in some magazines I get about "the twins" and discovered the Canyon and liked it well enough to research it more. I will likely keep the Taco but I want to know what else is out there.

I thought about the canyon before I bought my tacoma. At first glance it was appealing until I started seeing them on the road. Visually they are a mess. The body line is all walked out. The window line is lower than the hood and bed. The bed is way to tall. I think they made it deep just for bragging rights so they can say they have more load capacity. Before u buy one step back and take a good look at it. Do you want to drop 40k on a truck that looks miss matched. TOCOMA ALL THE WAY ;)

My taco did not make 40k before I started having brake problems, spring problems, vib, AC failed, and a few small things.....

I have owned every brand of truck in the past short of Ranger and frontier. All went to 60.to 70k before I had to do anything.
I have spent more time and money to point at about 52k than I did on the last dodge truck I sold at 130k and Ram at 158k or so combined.

    Really you think??

I think they look great. I prefer the Tacoma more, but I do like both.

I dunno, the tacoma looks mismatched and they just stuck a new nose and a tail on. Doesn't flow very well.

Collies look like clean modest truck to me, especially with a little lift. Grill isn't too big either like on the Taco and the Canyon.

I'm just not a fan. That truck there just looks odd to me, as where the Canyon looks better thought out and cleaner..

But you know what, a leveling kit or small lift and bigger shoes would look perfect in there.. Just my own preference.. But the Colorado that I saw in person was a z71 loaded package, and though nice, just didn't look as good close up as the Canyon..
