    The better coast
do you guys remember the new guy a while back posting (bragging) that he just bought his 42nd new toyota from a specific dealer?

but my neighbor has a colorado. it's a sharp looking truck at the right angle. I do like the GMC more, never ridden in either or a 2016 so cant give yes or no.

but I will say in terms of looks 16 tacoma>canyon>colorado. I am interested in some comparisons as well.

To be fair here are both trucks leveled or minor lift and bigger tires..

I mentioned earlier about the full time auto 4 wd feature. Tacoma will loose significant sales to vehicles without it. In this neck of the woods where lots of snow over tarred roads happens frequently, AWD vehicles have a huge advantage. The previous gen 4 Runner had this feature standard and it was good for the non mechanical group like my wife who just could not deal with truck style 4 wd which is primarily meant for off road. Driving, even the new Tacoma with an empty bed and without dedicated snow tires is a handful sometimes and makes the truck unsafe to drive over snow covered roads at any speed in 2 wd and at even moderate speeds in 4 wd. It is the primary reason you see so many trucks off the road. This along with poor winter tires including many AT tires which these trucks come with make them very poor winter vehicles for the inexperienced and non mechanical winter drive.

On the occasions my wife must drive our Taco in snow, which has winter tires and 400 plus lbs of weight in the back, it takes a 15 minute mini course in when to engage the 4 wd and when to use the LSD instead. Sorry, if Colorado every makes a reliable truck, with their auto 4 wd feature, I would have one in a heart beat over the Tacoma for this feature alone. I have been a Toyota guy for my entire adult life but this feature is a life saver for many like my wife.....her car btw, is AWD.

Personally if I had 40k to spend on a truck I would be taking a real careful look thru the old truck trader for a nice 67-72 chev/gmc 4x4, I just missed one a few months ago and still kick myself every morning. New trucks are always nice but damn the old ones are fine and easy to work on.

The twins are the ugliest trucks created to date. The engineer needs to be taken out back.

    Seriously.

The twins look pretty good when they are lifted a bit with beefy tires. Otherwise they look like a Chevy Equinox with a bed. And basically it is just that.

i was looking at the colorado before i bought my tacoma. chevy vehicle have to many problems and too many recalls since the government took them over. also its hard to get a chevy or gmc into the dealer for service around here. our work trucks are chevys and gmcs and nothing but problems.

This is a very good point. I actually wrecked my 05 Tacoma because I was driving in mixed conditions dry pavement with occasional ice/snow patches, and didn't bother with the 4wd since it was mostly dry. The auto 4wd would have saved me. I was praying they would add this feature to the gen 3, but no dice. Awd and auto 4wd are amazingly good features to have in heavy snow country. Makes me want to wait and see what the new ridge line will look like. It supposedly has a very sophisticated awd system, although it's not a "real truck", it may suit the needs of the non-hard core off roader.

I was doing some research on 2WD and 4WD recently just because the price and mileage difference in trucks can be significant. I'm surprised that they still make trucks with rear 2WD and/or don't have upgraded 2WDs where you have front wheel drive but have a rear locker or something. But I guess in trucks for hauling and towing you need the power to go to the rear and a system that is rear or front wheel capable is just as heavy as 4WD. Just more reason why 2WD in a truck is just not a truck (not in an area where any snow falls... or where there exists mud or nature).
They need to create a magical 2WD/4WD/AWD system.

Yes...4 wd trucks with a heavy differential with no weight in the bed are crazy when they are on dry pavement and you suddenly hit snow or ice.....the extra 400 lbs in the back helps some but it can really jump up and bite you as you know with no warning. You are kind of stuck because you can't put the truck in the regular 4 wd on the pavement . I would rather be driving in a foot of snow everywhere then the conditons you discribe. If the ridge line did not cost so freak'n much for what you get and have such a small bed, I would have considered one. The two I know who have them, like them a lot. They will go nearly any where a Colorado will go.

That is one of the things I like about my '03 4Runner -- the lockable Torsen center diff. Going to a part-time 4WD system would be a step backwards for me.

I love that about my 04 4runner as well.. Though it is a true 4wd system due to the Torsen diff., it works great when not locked and in AWD mode.. I've rarely had to lock my center diff in either snow or mud.. As a matter of fact, they have started to fail on higher mileage 4runners due to folks just completely forgetting about them and never using them.. You have to actually remember to use it every so often to keep it lubricated lol..

I think the Colorado is for the guys who still wish Toyota offered the 1st gen Tundra...just now Chevy is building it. The diesel specs look awfully good...and really it isn't going to cost that much more than a Tacoma...guessing around $37K...not cheap...but neither are these new tacomas.

I have been thinking of going that route...found a 70's F250 Crew with a 12V Cummins swapped in. Shit...you can run those things on dead cats...

As someone who has never owned a truck, my observation is that the Colorado & Canyon are more suited for someone who wants an on-road truck to tow stuff and carry stuff and prefers a more luxury/classy look to their vehicle, while the Tacoma is more for someone who prefers a rugged off-road vehicle that has good ground clearance and has a more sporty "bad ass" look to it.

One can never have too many light bars.
Judging by the Colorado commercials I think you're pretty spot on. They are definitely marketing to the first time truck buyer who will mostly use it as on road truck. I think they are trying to compete mostly with people who would be more inclined to buy a midsize sedan. They seem like they want to grow the market more than steal business from Tacoma.

I try not to get involved in these types of threads. But I just have to say this..... I didn't buy a truck to be more "car like". I bought a truck to be a truck...and part of that truck experience is for it to be "truck like". Sure a few creature comforts here and there are nice...but I purposely did not buy a plush riding/feeling vehicle. I bought a truck...period.

And no...I'm not some blind fanboy. A fanboy likes their truck because they own it. An enthusiast owns their truck because they like it. I am an enthusiast. Toyota just happened to be the one who made the vehicle I am enthusiastic about.

IF it's the same system as the yukon xls not sure it is? I wouldn't call it 100% an advantage per say as we have had issues of it not even going into 4wd. It is nice when it works though

Funny you shouLd mention that. My road is 1 1/2 miles out and snow covered so my wife just put it into AWD on our 04 4Runner to go out and back in. In about 7 years, the light remained blinking indicating that it was not fully engaged. Of course, it was, and worked fine but the light kept blinking. So, I had both the transfer case and the front differential fund changed, hoping that it was a position switch that was faulty and not the actual actuator that was at fault. I then put it in AWD and drove 20 miles with the light blinking to bring the temp I n the oil up. I switched it off and back on again and it worked perfectly ever since. I then told my wife to leave it in AWD for at least ten to 15 minutes of driving to make sure everything gets lubed. No problem till I sold it at 11 years. I have always found that these things have to be used for extended periods every month at least. The 4 wd in the truck is less temperamental but I still use it regularly when I can in the summer. You have to use them or you have problems ! Toyota feels this way too and is why the only offer AWD permanently. It should be offered on the SR5 too.
