Best GPS for off roading?

I'm looking for a gps that has trail maps for commonly traveled trails. The gps that I have now pretty much just stops right at the beginning of the trail which sucks, so I'm looking to find out everybody's favorite off roading gps and why.

Delorme PN-60 is by far the best for Maine.

 

I live in Colorado and we have more than 150 off-roading trails here. So if I could get some sort of GPS they could take me from my house to the trail, and then have maps all the way throughout the trails that would be perfect.

 

Ive heard good things about the Garmin 60csx. Does anyone have one that would vouch for it? The reviews online look good

 

I have a garmin e-trex 20. It definitely isn't as good as the ones previously suggested but its portable so you can use it for hiking trails as well as any trails accessible by truck. Mine was about $160 and the map pack was about another $100. I know the Garmin Oregon series ones are pretty good too. I'm not sure about other brands but I know with all the Garmin stuff you buy the GPS with a super basic map that basically only shows major roads and the map packs have to be bought and downloaded from their website.

Not sure, but i have used iphone apps on my ipad so i dont see why not the other way around

 

Do you have motionx? I found out that they do make one for iPhones, but from looking at their website and watching a review I can't tell if they actually have off road maps/trail maps. It just looks like a normal gps

 

I have MotionX GPS HD. Works great. Use it all the time in the mountains of Colorado. I start it when still in cell service (in town), it downloads the map, good to go. I have loaded the waypoints from FunTreks that coincide with their off-road books. It's a great and accurate tool.

 

Up in the mountains is good, but does it actually have trail maps? Like Yankee Hill or slaughterhouse Gulch or Georgia pass? Stuff like that?

 

If it's recognized as a "road" then yes. However, trails like Bear Creek and Imogene Pass, no. But the numbered waypoints provided by the FunTrek books mark the points of interest and intersections along the way. Just reference the number with the book to get detailed info about that section of the trail.

 

I don't know if they are considered a "road" but a lot of the ones that I go On do have trail markers so maybe?

 

I also use Motion X on an iPhone(4s). Works pretty good most of the time, and useful for tracking elevation + gain/loss, avg. mph, time, and a bunch of other stuff. You can download maps ahead of time and save them to your device so you don't have to rely on spotty cell coverage to load data.

It's definitely worth the $1.99 or whatever for download. You can use terrain maps/street maps/as well as Apple/Motion X/Google and it will overlay your GPS location.
