2016 TRD Sport vs OffRoad

So, an all new bigger differential with a locker? I never had differential problems, but the complaint here was the locker diff wasn't as big as the non-locker diff on all the Tacomas before 2016.

 

No, that's cool. That was what I thought and what everyone has been saying about the 15s and before. Was watching one of those youtube videos and they were talking about TRD and not specific about OR or Sport and he said the ride on the highway was very rough. Then when I saw it here I wanted to double check.

He is a GSP! He is my best buddy. We do a lot of pheasant hunting, none wild here though, we have to go to a hunting preserve. I think he might be more excited for me to get a truck than I am. I sold my FJ to buy a VW diesel a few years ago when gas got over $4 a gallon (I was driving a ton.) I don't think he has forgiven me yet. But I wrecked that back in the spring, so when the Taco comes in he will be a truck dog again. I had 2 GSPs before him that lived to be 15. One of them use to stand on a platform I built in my old access cab and put his head on my shoulder everywhere I went.

 

The locking and non-locking diff was the same size on older trucks, the non-locking had 2 more bolts on the ring gear and a stronger type of bearing caps, but the differential itself was the same size: 8.0".

Part of the reason I went with an OR was the suspension. I was pleasantly surprised how plush it feels both on and off road. I 1st noticed it on a speed bump at the dealer, no rear hop like most other trucks.

I have test both.... the Sport has a stiffer feel, and is able to handle corners more aggressively. the OR is softer, takes bumps easier. Its not a huge difference, but noticeable if you look for it.

 

Where was this filmed? Looks similar to the terrain I like to drive in Baja California. I will guess Arizona?
So, the stock Off Road tires are Goodyear now (no more BFG Rugged Trail TA)? Hope the KO2 tires never get a sidewall flat!

 

Yes in AZ.
Yes Goodyear tires.
Sidewall was not where the flat was. Was in the tread, prob from a rock.

 

Still the same concerns with BFG. The new model is supposed to have addressed that issue. Still deflate your tires off road. 25 psi to 20 recommended off the pavement.

 

can anyone suggest a good primer in whatever media (book, website, youtube, etc) on how to approach off-roading? I'm a total noob.

 

Great info on this post guys. I'm still wavering over Sport vs OR. I know all the spec difference issues, looks, etc. one professional review indicated bouncy & noisy ride in the road with Sport. Great OR ride off road. I'll seldom be off but like the looks of the OR. Am a bit concerned about the ride on road/hwy. anyone have a comparison of these on the hwy?

 

Don't watch YouTube. Read Internet articles instead. If someone took the time to write it, it's probably better than some guy spouting off about wheeling on YouTube.

But, there is a good recovery series on YouTube make it Africa

1. Get an off-road vehicle
2. Drive vehicle off-road
3. Break vehicle
4. Learn to fix vehicle
5. Drink beer

Has anyone removed the front plastic trim on the Sport to get better clearance. If so, is this finished out like the Offroad is?
