Spare tire/rim-does it matter to you?

Just curious...

Is there anyone else out there in Tacoma World that have their spare tire on a matching custom rim/wheel as well as the same style/brand of tire that you already have mounted as the other four wheels on your Tacoma?

Yea I know it's only the spare tire but my spare tire is the exact same style/brand (and of course size) as well as-along with the matching rim/wheel as the other four on my Tacoma.

Purchased from Discount Tire a few years back:

Tires are:
BFGOODRICH 265/70 R17 KO's (no longer produced, replaced by KO2's)

Rims/Wheels: MB Wheels Torque (no longer produced)

Bottom line though is-as long as you have a good reliable spare tire, regardless of match, is the most important thing.

I've often thought about buying another rim for my truck so my spare would match, thing is I get afraid it will get damaged by rocks and rust and such under my truck.

 

If you decide to do it, install it "inverted" with the front face of the rim/wheel facing upwards?
That's how I have my spare installed.
Also I have installed an extended braided air line hose connected to the spare tires air stem and connected to the lower section of my rear bumper.
Works great especially when the spare tire needs air or when the dashes TPMS alert symbol turns on, can easily check/add air to the spare tire if needed, after all the other four tires have been checked.

 

However it fits is how I'd do it. I recommend putting felt on the tire hanger where it touches the rim...I could see the hanger as is scratching the shit out of your rims

 

No scratching the face (front part) of my rim, reason why? Because the hangar's holding plate is not touching/holding the front part of the rim when mounted-it's holding the "back" part of the rim (because it's mounted inverted).
If there were any scratches to the rim it would be on the back side of it, that is , again "if" there are any and if there is-it doesn't matter (at least to me) because it can't be seen, that is if I would ever need to use my spare.

 

Damn. I can;t even remember the last time I had a flat tire. Seriously. I know for a fact it was over 15 years ago.

 

I like having a 5th matching tire and wheel and rotating it in. Really makes a set seem to last.

 

Matching size, still on the stock steel wheel though.

 

I have a spare OEM black steelie under the bed and recently bought a matching alloy OEM wheel to throw in the bed on long trips and on off-roading activities in order to replace flats quicker and the greater peace of mind. I also carry a patch kit, and tie down the spare with lock cables. But, the spares do not have matching tires, yet.

 

Then just put the wheel up there up side down with the rim facing up, that way any scratches would be in the wheel well and not on the face. Plus, the loneliness of it getting scratched by rocks is less than that for rims that are on the actual axles.

 

Same here, done it since the truck was new.

 

I have 3 sets of stock steelies. As I rotate my sets through their seasonal use, I just use one from a set that's off the truck as the spare. My current problem is that I made the jump to 33s (255) this year. I do have a full size matching spare on a matching rim, but it's thrown off my system - until I buy new winter tires in the next month or so. First world problems...

 

I bought an extra trd offroad 1st gen wheel off ebay for $80 and mounted one of my old nitto terra grapplers on it (265/75/16) since my old spare was a 15" wheel

Yea I hear you about not having a flat tire for sometime (which of course is good by the way!).

Since I've had my 2008 Tacoma, purchased brand new, I have yet to have a flat tire thank God! But still you just never know, so to definitely have peace of mind I make sure my spare tire is good to go-always check from time to time.

The following is the last time I remember encountering a flat.

My daughter has a 2012 Tacoma and I remember we were driving back from the beach (just last year 2014, I was driving) and on the highway as I recall all of a sudden the dashes TPMS lights up then soon afterwards we could feel the truck kind of start to wobble, quickly pulled over on toward the side, sure enough the rear drivers-side tire was completely flat n dead.

It was not a blow out just something (?) slit the sidewall of the tire. Her 2012 has regular OEM Dunlop tires, along with the spare, changed the flat and afterwards were back on are way.

Of course once back in town went and replaced that bad tire with a good one.

Lesson learned-never take or assume anything for granted!

 

This is what I want to do as well. I keep looking for single wheels. There's lots of full sets though.

I'm going to buy 5 tires when I get my next set and rotate them all through. I'll keep the stock spare for 2 spares for off roading. I'm going to get a new bumper with tire swing out since I put an aux fuel tank in the spare tire location.

 

Last flat was November 2004. My wife was driving my brand new 05 Tacoma home from the dealership and I was driving my old Saturn. Saturn shit the bed with a flat on the way home. I've got a an aftermarket tire on for my spare but have changed tires since and left it alone. Destination 265-70 on now with a Bridgestone revo 265-65 for my spare. As long as I use it for one of my front tires and don't use 4 wheel drive I'm ok. Actually I need to just replace it as its old as fu#k.

 

I've had my tacoma for 3 years. I've gotten 3 flats. I have a smitty built patch kit plus a good compressor. I'll be carrying 2 spares for long off road trips.

 

I do have matching rim and tire size and all. Long story short I didn't pay for it. Prior I had matching size tire bit that's it. Though at 215k the spare has never been used
